Best RPG game of all time? Best game of all time?

Personally, it is my all-time favorite game. However, feel free to disagree if you do. All opinions are welcome under this topic as far as I am concerned.

What were your most favorite or least favorite parts of the game? Same goes for characters, materia, summons, etc.

Did  anyone here ever get around to beating both Emerald and Ruby weapon?

Has anyone here ever played "Dirge of Cerberus?" And if so, what did you think?

Has anyone here seen "Advent Children?" And if so, what did you think?

I really liked FF7, though I'd not played any of the final fantasy series before then.  I liked it for the narrative that it followed though more than the system and all that.   The graphics for summons were really great the first few times, but then later on I was kindof hoping they'd get over with quickly, so I could do my 2000 points of damage and move on to removing the other 5,000,000,000 HP. *sigh*

The weapons were tough, but I have to say that the only thing that I couldn't beat was the weapon in the desert by gold saucer, wasn't it ruby?  I could beat Sephiroth and all the other things, just not that thing, and I had spent my time on the game so I pretty much had everything: Knights of the round, most ultimate weapons, pretty much every bit of equipment, but still.. ugh.  Even entering the proper way, with two characters down, lucky 7's, and a full level, maximum special attack.  It was so frustrating, and after about the 20th time, over the course of a few days, I kindof gave up, and just went and beat up Sephiroth the emo-boy to end the game.

Definitely one of my all time favorite games, ever. Mostly because of the memories playing it though.
Anyway, my friend and I replayed it recently and found that the weapons weren't all that hard anymore.

This game holds a special place in my heart, but I think I like 8 more.

I think SNES and PS1 rpgs are my fav. I replay FFIII, VII, and VIII all the time. I'm so stuck in the past.

hahaha! wow, i'm just the opposite. The new pretty graphics are too much for me... I love the simplicity of older games, graphic wise, I mean Cool

But It's mostly new-er rpgs I find myself not being able to play... and I love rpgs Confused Still planing on finishing FF XII though... someday

I'm so with you on the RPG thingy.  I didn't like the look of most of the newer RPGs, simply because of the realistic looking graphics.  A lot of the allure of fantasy and sci-fi has always been that it's up to the reader/player to fill in the blanks, and the imagination does that far better than an actual visual representation ever could for me.

The way I interpret it is that we see these as their final 'that's what a dragon looks like' and it's not nearly what it is in our heads.  On the Snes, in 8 bits, a dragon is so much more representational than any attempt at being 'factual', and so we can make it into something more terrible, but being shown a realistic one kindof takes away a bunch of that.  Imagination as a visual creation tool for the user, is being ignored more and more as we progress down this path, with 'lets show it all as it is' as the number one focus with 'improving' graphics.

Though sound still has it's psychological overtones, dragging you into a scene, or not, I think there's more of a dependence on that than on letting a single person apply their scary bits in their head to something half seen.  That's why a really scary horror scene works. By not letting the viewer see the thing, and letting imagination work its stuff.

Ok, I'm switching off for now. :activates switch on side of head:

Eh I'll read a book if I want to use my imagination, just like I'm not going to pay to see a movie in 8bit so that I can imagine myself what the characters look like, you know?  I can see your point though. I'm especially a fan of graphics that are so good you can create your own character and they still look good in the game ala mass effect Very Happy
