EA Grand Slam Tennis Vs Sega Virtua Tennis 2009
The summer is here and after a long wait for a serious Wii Tennis game, we get two arrive at the same time.
I'm in the process of putting the two new tennis titles head to head, my review will appear here shortly (damn they're quite addictive, this may take some time)
EDIT: Okay, at first I thought this was going to be easy, but as I get more play with both titles it's getting more difficult.. .. but still working on it, and grabbing a few in game screens too.

Tennis has been staple part of Wii owners gaming since the little white box first started arriving in homes. After the popularity of Wii Sports, players have been waiting for a more realistic tennis game, and after a long wait typically two turn up at once. Both titles support the new Motion Plus accessory with varying results.
So over to centre court for our match.
As the two contenders take to the court, we instantly see a noticeable difference in visuals.
We're greeted with the opening screens for both games EA have gone for a more cartoon like feel to the graphics, even on the menu's.
The EA Sports characters are cartoon like representations of players past and present, and while you can tell who they represent, initially there's something a bit lacklustre about them, but as you play it's not so much of an issue. Some of the text on the menu's seems a little blurry which i think could be down to the cartoony style of the game.
Meanwhile in Virtua Tennis we get photo's of the players we can select and much better modelled player characters. Menu text is sharp and clear and easily readable.
While I'm no graphics harlot, I do like my games to look reasonable. so on first impressions Virtua tennis takes the first point.
0-15
When I first played Grand Slam Tennis with the Wii Motion Plus, i thought it was broke, it was very poor at tracking my actual moves, and despite saying hold the wiimote still for 2 seconds to cure any synch problems it didn’t seem to cure it. With Virtua tennis it did seem the more accurate of the two but it throws up it’s first bad point, for each shot a little bar appears on the screen, with a line in the middle, this is to angle your shot, with the line in the middle being a flat shot to the middle of the court. While it’s only on the screen for a second, it just doesn’t seem right.
Using the Nunchuck to help move your player round the screen is far easier on both games than using the + on the wiimote, In GST, you can also use this to angle your shots, which can be a great bonus as you play some of the more tricky players. Player AI seems slightly stronger on VT.
I think in both cases playing without motion plus and having it available does change the game somewhat, and if your using motion plus the shots you got away with before simply won’t work, so with MP be prepared to refine your skills a little more.
So when it comes to actually playing GST takes the point, despite the initial MP issues.
Score now 15 All.
Creating your own player for Grand Slam (GST) or World Tour (VT) is quite basic, although VT has more customisation options available. As GST has the official courts for the Australian open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US open, it’s far more realistic than some of the VT offerings. When you win a game in GST you unlock new equipment from your sponsors.
Of the 2 I found the GST Grand Slam more fun to play, some of the VT mini games seem out of place, and while they can improve your skill a little, they seem like they’ve been added to appease the great minigame god.
So for the career modes GST wins the point
30-15 to GST
I'm still playing both titles at the moment, so at the moment GST leads slightly, so while I take a bit from a banana and have a drink of Robinsons Barley water I'll leave you waiting for the last few rallies in our head to head...
To be continued.. (no you won't have to wait 6 months like mid season finale's) |

Well after thoroughly playtesting both games, I've decided that Grand Slam tennis has the edge.
However since playing Wii Sports Resort it makes you realise just how poorly both EA and Sega have implemented the motion plus capabilities, they very much feel like they were tacked on at the end.
If you're after a tennis game I'd say go for Grand Slam.
