my list of watched/watching/watched a bit of anime is daaaaaaaang long. too long to post on here so i'll just direct you to my myanimelist page. i probably need to update that...
but yeah, watched Voltron, Robotech and a few others when i was a kid, didn't really register it as Japanese animation though. when i was in high school, Sailor Moon hopped onto US televisions, it piqued my interests a lot, along with Dragonball Z and Tekkaman Blade. my dad was a manager at Hollywood Video and brought home one of Masamune Shirou's anime (can't remember if it was Black M-66 or the original Appleseed oavs...) so i began to browse the animation section, which i had been unaware of. i rented GunBuster and from there i was pretty much smitten with anime. started attending the local con, Fanime, met friends (some with whom i'm extremely close to to this day) online via IRC and have been watching fansubs since they were still only available on VHS tape sent by mail! XD yeah, i'm pretty dated... still watch anime to this day though i'm taking a bit of a hiatus to catch up on some j/k/asian dramas i hadn't gotten around to watching.
as for yuri/shoujo ai, i was translating for the manga scanlation group, Otenba
, doing titles such as Kannazuki no Miko, Read or Dream and Hayate x Blade before they got licensed. i regularly hang out/idle in #lililicious, who also translate yuri anime/manga for fans. i plan to do a yuri panel at Fanime, provided i can find the time between work and school. x_x;
so yeah, i'm down with the anime/manga/yuri talk if other people are. :3

animeI love anime, and my absolute favorite is:
Haibane Renmei.. and let me tell you why!
The series is about being reborn, and discovering your darkness before it consumes you. Even though there aren't any clear lesbian or gay themes in the series some characters probably are. It's about the feeling of falling on earth and being charged to declare your purpose. When it starts, you think "oh, this is about a bunch of non christian angels redeeming themselves" but what it's really about is the power to save someone else no matter how powerless you feel.
That series is gorgeous, moving, and damn infecting. Prepare to be permeated.
Oh,
and Lain, Ergo Proxy, the Scrapped Princess (if you want a little old school). and Full Metal Alchemist can't be missed.
ditto on the Witch Hunter Robin.. it's My So Called Life for the hunter 90's witch. It's one of those animes where nothing happens.. yet everything happens.
Anime is almost endless. I like that about music too.. you can watch and watch and never watch it all.

Haibane Renmai was definately a good one from Yoshitoshi ABe, i feel fortunate that i was able to get a hold of 2 of the short doujinshi he did and based it on. if you really enjoyed it Lyska, you might want to check out the book Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Murakami Haruki (or Haruki Murakami, if you go by the English way of arranging names...), which supposedly influenced/inspired ABe to do Haibane.
as for there being gay/lesbian overtones, while i would say that certain characters certainly become attached to one another, probably beyond that of a common friendship, i wouldn't go so far as to say anyone was 'in love' with each other. along with the message that everyone has the power to save someone no matter how powerless they feel, it's also about learning to believe and trust that the people close to you will be there to help you, and that there is no shame in asking them for help in your darkest of times. and i think it's that level of trust that people 'inflate' to be love. not that i blame them. heck, i'd be all for it but yeah... n.n; it's a pretty common theme in a few of ABe's works really. i'd definately recommend it to those who can handle a somewhat slow paced 'slice of life' drama.
my personal all time favorites are:
Vision of Escaflowne / 天空のエスカフローネ
Princess Tutu / プリンセスチュチュ
GunBuster / トップをねらえ!
Macross Plus / マクロスプラス
Kaleido Star / カレイドスター
Spirited Away / 千と千尋の神隠し
Princess Mononoke / もののけ姫
Slayers Next / スレヤーズNEXT
i like and have watched a lot more anime than that but those are the ones i can marathon over and over again and never get sick of EVER.
as for stuff that's yuri/shoujo ai/has girls in love/like/fans hope they love/like each other, there's:
Maria-sama ga Miteru*
Simoun*
Kannazuki no Miko
Strawberry Panic
Kashimashi ~ Girl Meets Girl ~
Sailor Moon (well, at least the last couple of seasons...)
Noir*
Madlax
El Cazador
Mai HiME
Mai Otome
Revolutionary Girl Utena*
Kaleido Star* (my own bit of wishful thinking...)
Haibane Renmei*
...and much, much more. if there's an *, that means i particularly enjoyed watching it. for a full list of titles or just about everything considered yuri in nature, whether it's in canon or fandom, i'd suggest checking out Yuricon for all your needs.

I'm wouldn't call myself a huge fan of anime, but I surely do like it. My favorite series are Noir, a story of two female assassins, and Wolf's Rain, which follows four wolves trying to find a way to the paradise - both of them are really beautiful and touching. Over the time I have also became attached to Bleach.
As for yuri.. well, I tried watching Maria-sama ga Miteru, but I didn't really like it. I'm still willing to try something out, though, so I'm open for suggestions.

I haven't watched Haibane Renmei, but the way you describe it i'm definetly going to watch it very soon. omg i love ergo proxy, it's a really cool show. I have seen a couple of Wolf's rain episodes and it looks awesome.
The very first anime i watched was called "Ginga nagaraboshi gin" or "silver fang" and it will always be my favourite anime, cause the story is so deep and moving(and there's a hella lot of blood) ^^

is there a certain genre that you prefer to watch? Maria-sama is pretty slow and well...girly, so i can understand it's not for everyone.
if you liked Noir, you'd probably like Madlax and El Cazador, since they're done by the same production crew. there's also Avenger but i have yet to get around to watching that.
along the lines of things more action oriented but still yuri, there's Mai HiME, Mai Otome, Simoun, Kannazuki no Miko and Revolutionary Girl Utena (if you can handle your head hurting a bit).

God, how did I forget to mention GNG? I first saw it when I was just a little kid and I still love it, it's such a beautiful story. And sad, too; I've burst out crying countless times while watching it, 'specially when Benizakura leaves his home and when Riki dies. Damn, I'm starting feel nostalgic.

You're right, I should try out Madlax and El Cazador, they seem to be more fitting for me. It's not that I dislike girly animes, I just prefer ones with more serious themes - Maria-sama was way too cheery.

wow a GNG fan like me, yay I have the series on dvd and i agree that it can be really really sad, and yeah the scene where Riki dies will always make me cry. I dunno if i'm going to watch the series about his son weed hmm.
I've also watched Maria-sama ga miteru, and i thought it was really slow and nothing exctitng never happened( though satou sei was kinda cool) Kannazuki no miko was def more my cup of tea, but the whole mecha deal got really old, really quick.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting to meet a GNG fan here. ^^
I've seen Weed and even though the story is pretty good, it's been drawn so poorly that it's not really worth the money - at least I sold my own DVDs.

I've heard that it was poorly drawn, and that is kinda why i haven't gotten around to watching it yet -.-
Anyways maybe we should let some others geek out too lol
Has anyone seen claymore.. or loveless?
Loveless is a really good story. Ritsuka is soo cute, how can you not like him, Soubi is.. different lol. I've seen the anime and i'm reading the manga at the moment, and there is some shoujo ai in it both the manga and the anime, though it isn't focused on so much, it is there =p

yeah, while Maria-sama ga Miteru has yuri to it, it's also josei, meaning it's very 'slice of life'. so yeah, not much of a 'deep story' to be found within it, mostly just...emotions, for lack of a better wrod. Strawberry Panic, which is kind of a parody of Marimite, has more of a story to it, rather than just individual character backgrounds that effect how everyone interacts with one another.
hmm...i watched Loveless but like a lot of yaoi my friends share with me, it's a bit too much on the emo side for me. i did enjoy Kouya and Yamato's side story though.
Claymore was fun. at first, it reminded me a lot of Berserk but with female warriors instead but it's quite different. i have to say, myself and a lot of people cheered when Raki was absent from episodes for a long while. he's a decent kid and means well but man...whiny/screamy much? x_x; the first few episodes were pretty meh but once they started Claire's flashback arc, things picked up. i'm curious to see what happens past the anime ending but i have yet to pick up the manga.
i'd really recommend Simoun if you want something with a deep and beautiful story and yuri. on the world of Daikuuriku, everyone is born a female but once they reach the age of 17, they can choose to remain female or begin the transition to become a man. although, in the nation of Simulacrum, if you make this choice, you are unable to continue piloting an advanced aircraft called Simoun, which were built by an ancient, yet somehow advanced civilization. other nations of the world want this technology for their own ambitions and are willing to wage a war to do obtain it, using technology similar to that of the 1920-30s, while a single Simoun is able to do an incredible amount of damage by 'drawing' ceremonial glyphs in the air. i'll stop there before i start spoiling stuff but yeah, it has a bit of a slow start but it picks up really quick. definately recommend it.
hmm...i haven't heard of or seen Ginga Nagareboshi Gin though it's interesting it was translated as Silver Fan. ginga = Milky Way, nagareboshi = shooting star and Gin = silver, though Gin is a common name as well. ah well, even official English translated name that the Japanese come up with is completely different so yeah... n.n;

I don't really have favourites but I do enjoy a good story and lots of gore and blood, one i can keep watching is blood +, if anyone wants to recommend more bloody titles then please feel free

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Kai - which would be the second season) is good and bloody. the way the story is told in a very 'visual novel' way in that there's usually multiple stories, with the last one pulling/linking them all together. i tell you this now since it'll seem like the characters get 'reset' after each story, and i just want to say that there IS a reason why, and it's worth seeing it through to the end.
Elfen Lied is definately bloody as hell as well, just within the first 5 minutes of the show.
Darker Than Black is an excellent series (though the ending kind of faltered unless they plan to do an OAV or second series to follow up on it) and is...not as bloody as the other two but can be ruthless in it's own way.
Speed Grapher is supposed to be pretty violent iirc though i have yet to finish it myself for it also tends to hurt the brain at times. XD
that's all i can think of off the top of my head but i'll write again if i think of more.

while some of them aren't necessarily 'we totally kiss onscreen' yuri, they do all feature two girls/women being in a situation that brings them close together. if you want a series that is 'we totally kiss onscreen,' then i would suggest either Kashimashi, which is kinda on the cheesy/mushy side like Strawberry Panic, or if you're wanting something with a bit more action, either Simoun or Kannazuki no Miko. although, if you ask me what my favorite is amongst that list, it's likely Kaleido Star. :3

Is there like, an anime version of The L Word?
Like, I know so much shoujo-ai is filled with 'almosts'. You watch 26 episodes only to get a small kiss at the end, and 'almost' touches, kisses, etc throughout the season. I'm not patient enough for that anymore. haha

Maybe Strawberry Panic would fit the bill? It became a lot more explicit than I was expecting from a girls school anime. Lots of fanservice.
Another good one is Simoun - flying mecha powered by kissing girls, and heaps of lesbian drama happening on the ship. The story and characters are really good, I enjoyed it a lot.
On a separate note, it's not yuri but has anyone mentioned Black Lagoon yet? I love that show! It's so kickass and Revy is so hot. Recommend to fans of girls with guns and lots of things blowing up.
Another show I just started watching is Seirei no Moribito. The main character is cool; a strong independent spearswoman who's a resourceful fighter and bodyguard. The scenery is rendered really prettily, if a bit overly CG at times.
Oh, and surely someone has watched Bubblegum Crisis? It's not really yuri but you can pretend it is XD
|
nekotine
|
yeah, Strawberry Panic and maybe even Kashimashi to a point is the closest you'll get to L Word anime-wise. in manga though, there's two that come to mind, and that's Shoujo Sect and Maka-Maka. they're a lot less 'fluffy' than SP and Kashimashi, seeing as they're manga for adults/older audiences.
Maka-Maka is a shounen yuri manga features two girls, Jun and Nene, who start out as good friends and as the manga progresses, so does their relationship. the subtitle of the manga kind of says it all, really- Love Sex Communication. at first, they're very 'good friends with benefits'-like, seeing as they both still see guys on the side, but by the end, it's obvious that they're very attatched to one another, even if they never really get to the whole romantic 'i love you' moments. you can download the entire manga from here, just be warned, it is pretty sexually explicit so read with caution around parents/young siblings/coworkers/etc. XD
Shoujo Sect is also a shounen yuri manga but i would say that it ranks higher on the 'fluff' scale seeing as the girls tend to get involved with one another after their sexual encounters. it features a cast from an all-girl private school, most of whom live together in dorms. there's no real story as it generally just jumps from 'couple to couple' but the main/most recurring characters are Honda Shinobu and Naitou Momoko, and while Shinobu is interested in Momoko, Momko is pretty turned off by the fact that Shinobu has Shane Syndrome. n.n; part of it can be downloaded from here, though i'm ashamed to say i/we haven't finished translating it because school/work/laziness has prevented me from doing so. for that, i apologize. <_<
but yeah, those are my suggestions.
|

Aha, I forgot about Shoujo Sect! Man those girls have sex at the drop of a hat.
I think I found a chapter from the second volume translated; is anyone else translating it? Otherwise, I could offer to help, I've read both volumes in Japanese. : D

Have been wanting to watch Naruto since my younger brother and cousins all watch it, but there are just way too many episodes! Caught a few episodes of Monster and it looked quite interesting, too.

I finished reading 12 Days and Voiceful, and i liked them both although 12 Days was a bit sad, and Voiceful did not have any real romance, it was more like a really close friendship. The Voiceful manga had a preview of First Love Sisters and it looked kind of cute. Anyone ever read this? Is it any good?

Has anyone seen the anime 5 centimeters Per Second? It's made by the same guy who did Voices of a Distant Star. I remember the previews for it, but I haven't seen it yet.
