Beowulf

sooo...as we have quite the plethora of Angelina fans out there, who's going to see Beowulf? sure, she'll be computer animated but hey, still her, right?

i dunno, for me, i'm not the hugest Gaiman fan and i know a fair amount of people are seeing it since his name is being plastered on it. i...like his writing but i hate his 'anti-climaxes'. it's pretty much why i couldn't bring myself to see Stardust, which i did read and felt rather 'meh' about it. if it were up to me, i'd much rather see a movie adaptation of American Gods but that's just me.

there's also the fact that it IS completely CG and...while i had no problems watching either Final Fantasy movies, for some reason, Beowulf pings some kind of discomfort in me. it's like they tried to make it TOO real and now i feel like i'm just going to watch a REALLY LONG INGAME FMV rather than a movie. it's like, if they were looking for that 'real' of a look, why not just do real actors then CG the heck out of everything else? i don't know, maybe i'm just being wonky but it really does weird me out for some reason... x_x;

i like Robert Zemeckis enough as a director, from Back to the Future to Who Framed Roger Rabbit to Forrest Gump but hmm... we'll see. maybe i'll do a matinee showing on a 'no school for me!' day. Mad

Ok so I'm honest enough to say that I wouldn't be at all interested in seeing this aside from it having Angelina in it. I'm not a big fan of animated movies so this doesn't really appeal to me. Still her being in it all sexy does appeal lol

I've pretty much decided not to go out to the movies anymore. The audiences are just too noisy and rude, and I didn't pay to listen to them. I just had a film festival ruined by the "look at me, listen to me, nothing else matters" crowd, and I'm pretty fed up. So, I'll wait for the DVD. I'll get to watch the special features, too, eat my own popcorn, and cuddle on the couch with my woman.

I'm only watching it cuz it reminds me of 300, especially in one of the trailers where he shouts "I am Beowulf" reminded me of "This is SPARTA"!

I'm a Neil Gaiman fan, so I heard about Beowulf before Angelina Jolie was attached to the project. I'd only go see this at the cinema if my friends insist on seeing it though.

I won't be going. This movie doesn't look interesting to me. I know I had to read the book in high school, but I can't really remember it. I don't like fantasy and stuff like this.

I do love to go to the movies, but I go to the late, late show when no one else is there. Then it's quiet and I can sit wherever I want.

Haven't been to the movies since um...The Heartbreak Kid though, I think. There hasn't been anything out there I've wanted to see (that and I'm slightly poor at the moment).
Fox_Croft666

the movie wouldn't interest me at all if it weren't for angie. even then... eh. I'm only going cause i work in a theater so it's free. I know her part will be minor since she had a faint part in the book and frankly i know what'll become of her. so to sit through another BS macho hero movie is a price to pay to see her for like 15 min unfortunatly. but hell i've sat through worse *cough* good shepherd *cough*

The movie doesn't follow the story of Beowulf at all. Angie's supposed to be playing Grendel's mother, a grotesque monster who lives under water. How does Hollywood manage to turn Grendel's mother into a naked Angie who tries to seduce Beowulf? Knowing Hollywood, Beowulf will probably end up being Grendel's father. Gross.

That said, the visuals do look interest, and I like Gaiman a whole lot. If one of my friends wants to see it and is willing to pay, I'll probably end up going.

I hear you about the audiences Jude, that used to turn me off as well, till we moved to Australia and discovered Gold Class, which is the only cinema we go to now haha Don't they have Gold Class in the US? It's well worth paying a little more, you can have hot food brought to you, drinks (including alcohol), sweets and those chairs are SOOO comfy. Also it sort of filters out all the morons that ruin it in the regular cinema.

You can check it out HERE. If Beowulf is showing there I'll be there! Oh and I like CG movies.
Fox_Croft666

all righty my vote is in. i'm not impresses as i knew i wouldn't be. the animation cheapened it unfortuantly. Angie's char is a creature that can shape shift so that explains why she's not grotesque in the previews. she's got some awesome abilities though. A braid tail... clever. the plot was different from the book and twisted the results.

Over all not to my liking, FIN

We have this theatre in Austin called the Alamo Drafthouse. It's always getting voted best independent theatre in the country. They serve food (have some of the best pizzas and fried pickles, which are just amazing) and they serve alcohol. What more can you ask for? Also, they don't allow young children except during early matinée shows, so you never babies crying or anything. On top of all that, the actually movie tickets are the cheapest in the city! Of course, I'm always spending money on pizza or fried pickles or creme brulee -- that's how they make all their money.

They also have a theatre downtown on 6th street where they do all their special events. They have sing-alongs, videoke, and this thing called Master Pancake Theatre where they bring in local comedians to make fun of the movie while it's playing a la Mystery Science Theatre. They also do crazy premiere events: for transformers, they brought in this giant, fire-breathing, robot t-rex that destroyed a couple of cars in a stadium they set up in the parking lot.

It's been my experience that people drinking just adds to the rudeness of the audiences. I don't go to see a movie to eat or listen to people laughing or commenting at the top of their lungs, constantly through the movie. I want to lose myself the movie, in the dark with a big screen and good sound, then AFTERWORDS (not during!), go out to eat with my friends and discuss the movie and whatever else we want to talk about.

Heyyy, I LOVE Gold Class too.. it's soooooo great and there's no way I'd go to 'normal' cinema anymore. The great thing about Gold Class is there's only 48 big comfy seats in each cinema and it's around$15 more than normal ticket prices so you don't get any the idiots in.
Also, even though they serve alcohol and food, you don't even notice it. Nobody get drunk in there or anything, it's usually couples sharing a bottle of wine or champagne. The food is pretty good too and the waitresses sneak in the dark to get it to you without any hassle. You barely notice they're there and there's little tables in between the seats, but you still get to cuddle up. It's awesome. Nothing like it.

Also the drive in theatre is the best. I love that, warm summer night, seats down in the back of the 4WD, big matress in there cuddled up with my girl with the trunk door open looking up at the huge screen. Plus our drive in sound comes through your car stereo so it completely surrounds you and can shake your whole car at times... lovely.

I'd go see Beowulf in either of these, but probably not in a normal cinema lol. Oh I've become such a cinema snob!

I would also like to add that Grendel's mother (Angelina Jolie) in the Beowulf film has HIGH-HEELED FEET. That's is clear evidence that the film panders to a young male audience. I doubt that Gaiman had anything to do with that.
Fox_Croft666

wonder what she'll do when high heels are out O.O GET THE HACK SAW
Margali

This film scores pretty high on the Hype Meter, but even with Angelina, it hasn't intrigued me enough to want to go buy a ticket. Still I'm sure it's worth a rental when it goes DVD.
GirlyG

I went and saw it the other night and Angelina is in it for probably 5 minutes or so all up, other than that it's a gorefest lol

I liked it, the animation was jawdropping, the story quite good and a moral that seemed to be a warning to people everywhere.

Not the greatest film ever, but entertaining. Also definitely not a film for kids!  Shocked
