Best and worst videogame movies

Gametrailers has just released a countdown of the ten worst videogame movies, and while I definitely agree with most of the choices on the list, I also got to wonder what my own choices for best and worst videogame movies would be, as well as what yours would be. Iīll start with the good:

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. I donīt consider the TR movies good movies by any means, but the opening part of COL I thought nailed the atmosphere, and to an extent, Laras character from the games, and the use of a remix of the TR theme only adds the icing. Overall the movie feels more like a secret agent movie with a supernatural twist than a TR movie, but the opening sequence always brings a smile of joy to my face.

Silent Hill. Having the city population turn up alive halfway through, and cutting back and forth between Silent Hill and the outside world took away the feeling of isolation and abandonment that I think is one of the games strong points, but as far as being faithful to the sourcematerial (both in story and visuals) and not making me cringe in terms of writing and acting, the Silent Hill movie  is the closest Iīve come to see a good videogame movie so far.

Now for the bad. Some of these I havenīt seen in so long I can barely remember them, but I do remember how bad I thought they were:

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider My dislike of this movie is twofold: I think itīs an embarassingly bad movie overall, with the writing and dialogue making me squirm, in defense of the director though; the released movie wasnīt what he had intended, the original movie had a more fleshed out story (judging from the book adaptation and reading about the filming of the movie), but itīs still a far cry from the game mythos. My second reason to dislike the movie is the fact that it had Eidos to scrap the original mythos and base the following games on the movie, losing virtually everything I liked about Lara in the process and replacing it with almost every cliché I hate.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The first Mortal Kombat movie was bad, but at least somewhat faithful to the game mythos, which just saves it from my list, but the second movie is just so bad I wanted to gouge my eyes out and rip off my ears while watching it, but I kept watching anyway, just to see how much laughably worse it could get.

DOA: Dead or Alive. It has fanservice and some really nice fightchoreography going for it, but competes with MK:A in terms of being embarassingly bad to watch and listen to, and the casting doesnīt help either. MK:A at least had the advantage of being somewhat faithful to the gamemythos, but DOA virtually only has the character names in common with the source material.

Double Dragon. Iīve never played any of the games, but I remember while watching the movie years ago that it was without a doubt one of the worst movies Iīd ever seen. Nuff said.

Street Fighter. Doesnīt have the fanservice and good fightchoreography of DOA or the faithfulness to the sourcematerial of MK to save it, so...

The Resident Evil movies. Granted, the games arenīt masterpieces of writing or (virtual) acting, but the RE movies are just cringeworthy in those regards, and Milla Jovovich may be nice to look at, but when she tries to act or play tough I just want to smash the TV to save myself from the experience. At least the movies pay respect to the game mythos, even if the storylines are entirely different.

Bloodrayne. I donīt think itīs as bad as everyone says it is (and that goes with the other Uwe Boll movies Iīve seen), half of it is as bad as most other Hollywood movies being released IMO, but the other half really scrapes the bottom, sometimes from underneath. But what Iīm most annoyed about is Uwe Boll not delivering on his promise of Kristanna Loken showing full nudity in the movie.

House of the Dead. See above, except for the bit about Kristanna Loken.

Doom. The title sequence gave me chills of joy, but it went downhill from there. Granted, itīs hard to make an engaging movie based on a single-character FPS with no cutscenes (if weīre talking about the original Doom and Doom II, and not Doom 3), but the writing, acting, and disregard of the games plot puts this one firmly on my list.

Well, those were the videogame movies I could think of. You probably wonder why "Super Mario Bros" or various other videogame movies arenīt listed here, but thatīs likely because I havenīt seen them (just about every videogame movie I have seen is listed here). So, what are your favorite and least favorite videogame movies? Do you even have any?
Babycha

I loved the Silent Hill movie, and I actually liked the first 2 Resident Evil movies too.

Bloodrayne... ugh, that's gotta be one of the worst videogame movies I've seen yet.
Earrame

House of the Dead was so terrible that I almost liked it. Then again, I'll watch anything with zombies in it so... Res Evil 2 was my favorite out of the Res Evil movies just because Sienna Guillory was in it. Very Happy

I did not like the Tomb Raider movies that much, and I am cringing at the release of Max Payne....
SnowRiver

When I saw the first pictures of MAX PAYNE (the movie of course) I was all excited.

Now that I've seen videos and all I just realize that Mark Wahlberg isn't good as Max Payne. He's too "cute".
But who knows I could be surprised.

I watched the 2 first Resident Evil movies with a lot of distance and actually liked them.
Didn't like the Tomb Raider movies I've seen.

tenshots26

My co-worker saw it he said it sucked. So whatever.
Babycha

I can totally see it sucking. I'm just curious about it. I'll rent it when it comes out.
tenshots26

I bet you would. I will just catch it online.
I Vitality I

I guess I will have to wait till it comes to DVD...

** Disappointed **
SnowRiver

Now I'm happy to work in the film industry.
I won't have to spend money to see it when it comes out here.

I'd rather pay and see a good movie.  Sad

The best AND worse Movie based off a video game I have ever seen. The Wizard. It's so horrible and campy that it's actually great.
