Betty on The L Word!Ok since it's in the topic already, I'm going to be the first to bitch about Betty in bloody The L Word!!!!
I can't stand that band and I hate the way they've taken over The L Word. First they were guest stars, then they were recurring guests and then they're writing the show and producing it! They can't sing, they certainly can't act and I don't want them writing the show!!!!!!
Phew I feel so much better. Now the weird thing is that El Capitain (Ilene Chaiken) clearly knows all the fans don't like Betty, so why is she still having them on the show? Anyway, I'm waiting on season four arriving on dvd any day soon so I can rewatch them and wonder why oh why Shane is such a loser.
Can't wait til season 5 in January..... hopefully with a new theme tune and without Betty!

I remember when I first watched the L word and heard Betty. I think I lost part of my hearing that day.
My love for the show died each time they made an appearance. And now that they're such a big part of it.......it might take me a while to gather the will power to continue watching the show once the new season comes out on dvd.

haha, every time I see them on screen I jump forward.
I refuse to acknowledge their existence in the L word.
Ack! I need Carmen back!
I must have my Carmen fix!

Gadget Girl

I'm so glad other people feel the same way that I do about them! I can't stand it. I'm really hoping they're not in the new series. Although I didn't enjoy Cybill Shepard in the last season either and I think she might be back, still she's not as bad as Betty.
Oh and also.. yes.. Carmen.... wahhhhhhhhh I miss her..... I can't believe she's just been so easily forgotten... nobody even mentions her anymore! Silly silly Shane.
Oh another character I dislike intently - Papi. Yawn, not attractive, dull, up her own ass and boring.

You know you can see Carmen on the NBC in Life. It's a pretty strange show, but fairly engrossing. If you like Carmen you'll probably love it as she plays a female cop.

I have a weakness for female cops......I think I'll give this show a looksie

Oh yeahhh...I have a weakness for female cops too. Reason I watch Law & Order SVU religiously is pretty much for Olivia. Ooh, and the cop in the Silent Hill movie...
I think I just have a thing for girls & guns (but especially when they're in uniform).
Oops, sorry. I'm totally off topic. Okay, so I agree with Gadget Girl. I don't like Papi all that much either.

That is so strange you have mentioned that female cop in Silent Hill. I was listening to the latest Girl Gamer podcast and they mentioned her. I obviously need to see that movie!
Oh and if you want to listen to the podcast you can find it HERE. It was the Halloween one that they mentioned the Silent Hill cop though I think.

The female cop in the Silent Hill movie is super ultra mega hot...and not just because of my blond fixation...
I looooooved Carmen as a DJ...I can't see her any other way.
Is it sad that I only pay attention to when she is on screen in her new show?
|
Gadget Girl
|
LOL,
I only watch the show when she's on screen too! I hate looking at that guy too, I'm just like give me more Sarah Shahi!!!!!!
She looks so hot in her cop outfit and I also miss having the lovely Carmen in The L Word.
As for hot chicks in outfits... yeah...... man the cop in Silent Hill was hot tooooo. But I only had eyes for Radha Mitchell in that movie. She is lovely too, I loved her in 'Love and Other Catastrophes' and in 'High Art'.
Still, I miss my Carmen fix on The L Word.

I hate Betty, and I don't know why they are still around. I mean I get that everyone hates Jenny but she is kept to be hated, it was fun in season 4 where she was the baddy. I really didn't appreciate though how season 4 is like a total retcon of season 3, it's like season 3 never happened, very very odd.
This is some funny shit about Papi being "butch".

L-wordso its funny....i guess i tuned Betty out.....so yeah they must suck....lol.....i know who they are i'm just oblivious to them on the show.....i guess i am to focused on hating Jenny....omg i hope she gets bit by a shark on that raft next season....she needs to go! i am a carmen, max, bette, and marina fan......even though marina slept with jenny yuck...
but hell yeah to olivia on SVU....she is so hot...i wish she guessed starred with elliot on OZ i would much rather have seen her naked then the chick from criminal intent...
cops are hot but i must say i am a sucker for hot women in scrubs.....i really enjoyed my last job working in a hospital!

LOL I can't believe I didn't mention Marina! She was my season 1 crush. I was gutted when she left, but then Carmen made up for it. I also have a little bit of a crush on Lara the soup chef lol. The reason for this? Well she's sweet looking but a sexy minx when it suits her.
Other than that, yes.. Jenny... very very odd. She is a dichtomy, I don't think that the writers know what to do with her to be honest. She's turned into a total bitch this season after sort of redeeming herself a bit last season. God knows what she'll be like next season, let's just say she does make it back off that raft unfortunately.
Anyone else hate Cybill Shepard in it?
|
xKiDDOx
|
There were times when I thought Jenny wasn't too bad...and then she'd do or say something really stupid, and I'd think she was awful again.
I like Alice and Shane the best. Shane was my favorite in the beginning, but I'm liking Alice more and more. Especially since I've listened to her band Uh Huh Her. They're awesome.
|
Lewill
|
I don't know why, but Cybill Shepard seemed out of place to me......maybe it was because she was surround by a bunch of hot younger ladies.
Marina definitely caught my attention in season one. It's good to know that I wasn't the only one disappointed when she left. I sort of crushed on Jenny for a few episodes, but that faded quickly. Now she just annoys me.
And seeing Cybil Bennet (the blonde cop in the Silent Hill movie) definitely made my viewing experience more enjoyable.

Gadget Girl
|
Have any of you been reading the spoilers about season 5? I've had a look at a few of the first episodes and I'm not sure how I feel about it to be honest.
I can't work out what they're doing with Shane. I go through phases of liking her and then not liking her. I start to think she's ok and then she goes and messes around with someone else who genuinely likes her. It's weird really, I get they're trying to show she's flawed and all that, but still, it's a bit annoying.
As for Betty's involvement, clearly they're friends with El Capitain or something...
Oh hey you know who was cute too, the vet that Jenny screwed around with.

haha my roommate can go on a 20 minute, without breathing mind you, about how much she hates Jenny. Pure. Hatred.

l-wordyes i am def glad to see marina's return...i am a die hard fan from season one....every season i would mention her....and sweet she made it back last season! last season was not like the rest....i am not sure if it was different writers or what....but i will be interested to see how the next season plays out.
its a bit weird to see cybil be a lesbian....and why does she have to hook up with the lawyer?? i am a fan of the lawyer just not with Cybil.....i think jenny would be a better fit for Cybil.....lol
shane shane shane....i think my fav part with shane is her sex scene by the pool....you can't top that one....and i love her underwear add....very hot....and i love her skate shop gig.....she is hot but not on the top of my list.
and the chef was def a hottie....and i very much enjoyed her character....i also like the chick bette fucked around with when she was with tina...the carpenter....hot stuff
carmen was cool.....what attracted me to her instantly was that tatoo that was on her lower back and wrapped around to her front....that made me want to F*ck her....and i am not like a big tatoo person....i don;t dislike them....i may get one....but i am not like normally attracted to them like that....
does anyone watch logo?? have you seen the new like wanna be l-word show called exes and oh's?? i would be interested to hear opinions about that...
and i'm still waiting for another lesbian series!!
|
Gadget Girl

Hey I've seen the first episide of Exes and Ohs and I'm not sure what I think of it. I can't get Logo here, but it was online and I checked it out. It seemed ok though, but I'm sure the main character annoys me for some reason. Has she been in another lesbian movie? Still the more lesbo shows the better as far as I'm concerened. What about South of Nowhere, anyone watched that?

ipodi just downloaded the 1st season of south of nowhere on my ipod! i am liking it so far i am only like 3 or 4 episodes into the season.....i know itunes has exes and oh's on there as well....i am bummed with the lack of GLBT stuf itunes offers.....its mainly a bunch of podcasts....i want to see some more tv/movie stuff on there!!

Hey ya know the thing with iTunes is though it's region specific. So I can't even get to download them here. Which sucks ass to be honest. I am gutted that I can't get them. They're only available in the US and South of Nowhere isn't even on DVD. It's meant to get really good the more you watch, much more engaging and character driven.

ituneswow that sucks about itunes...i had no idea it was region specific.....yeah i tried to buy south of nowhere on dvd and when i could not i downloaded it on itunes...its prob the only show i will pay for on there....i am not sure if you download music?? but one of the free sites i use you can download video and tv shows too....maybe you could download it off of something like that....

I downloaded almost all of the three seasons of SON. Haven't watched them yet, cause I'm still finishing up on the 4th season of The L Word. Once I finish that, I'll move on to SON. So yeah, you can get them free. I'm cheap and refuse to pay for things that I can download. Although I have gotten Uh Huh Her's album off of iTunes. I wanna support Leisha's band.

mmm...Carmen... it wasn't enough that she was totally hot but to make her a DJ as well? i was so jealous of Shane. T~T sure, she got a bit wonky towards the end but i still liked her.
ah, Jenny. she is indeed the character you love to hate. it's not so much that i hate her, i just hate the weird shit she ends up doing then being taken aback when it backfires on her. it's just...lacking in the whole common sense department...
Alice is a hoot, no one can deny that. she goes a bit nutso at times as well but at least does it with some humor. wow, i had no idea she had a band though! a quick glance at their myspace says they'll be in SF on the 18th! :O gah, too bad i'm broke after seeing Paramore in SF last week. ;_;
and Lara was DEFINATELY hot. being a red head helped with that. for me at least. ;3
Shane...i guess she's still a little too 'loose' for me to -really- like her. i mean, she definately has her moments and is awfully fun to oogle but as a character, she's not really the type i'd latch onto. pretty but better viewed from a safe distance if she were to really exist.
Papi...i find her character amusing in her pursuits but not much more than that. i pretty much agree with Marga Gomez (who was kind enough to come to my college to do her skit during Pride Month. she MC'd our drag contest too so i got to shake hands as i participated in it.) and c'mon, that limo of her's is PIMPIN'. you gotta give her that much. XD
as for SoN, i think it's alright. moves a little too fast for my tastes, which they seemed to improve on during the first bits of season 3 but then they sped up the script clock again. i was kinda disappointed that Spencer and Ashley reconciled so fast. it's one of the few times i would've much rather had a cliffhanger type ending, with both of them wavering on their feelings (or at least Spencer as she hooked up with Carmen). then again, it is high school and i guess impulse decisions might make more sense in such a setting. ...or i'm just over thinking things. XD

I can't really hate Jenny. Yes, she says and does a lot of stupid, stupid things (Bette: A gold star is someone who's never had sex with someone of the opposite sex. Jenny: Can I be a gold star even though I've had sex with a man?) but she also gets some of the coolest lines on the show. I love it when she tells Mark off in Season Two and how she takes apart all the problematic shit that Max does. Politically and socially she's much more radical than the other characters, and for that I appreciate her.
Carmen is pretty meh to me. Her character isn't very realistic, IMO. Why was she with Shane, other than for the sake of giving Shane artificial depth? I didn't think they really had any chemistry anyway.

She does indeed get some good lines but I dunno...maybe she's just a little too intense for me? n.n;;
Mmm now that you mention it, you've got quite a point about Carmen. I must've been too busy oogling her and her DJ set up. XD

And yay, another Bay Arean! \o/ I guess I need to pay just a bit more attention to the info that follows everyone's name and icon. n.n;
If you end up going, and by some monetary miracle, I do too, feel like meeting up at all? If I don't come off as a crazy nutso that is. <_<; I guess I'm just kinda used to meeting people I become acquainted with from online sources. Made quite a few good friends that way really. But I'll understand if not everyone shares the same sentiments. Can never be too careful these days, really. DX

Carmen is completely uninteresting to me as a character. Her personality is kind of bland. She's conventionally attractive, but I don't find her particularly attractive, personally. As oliemoon said, she had absolutely no chemistry with Shane, and I'm not even sure why Shane went for Carmen, except for the fact that Shane goes for almost anyone.
I disliked Papi, I find her public persona repulsive. However I will admit that she has some depth, because when she isn't acting like an idiot and is actually herself, she seems to be a sweet person.
I liked Lara and Dana. They were good together.
Dana is my favourite character. I also like Alice, though I didn't like how obsessive she got when she was with Dana, but her neurotic tendencies make her an interesting character.

Totally agree with you here. Lara and Dana were such a cute couple, I was devastated to see how things ended with them to be honest. Lara was such a sweet sweet character. I was pretty gutted she just disappeared after sleeping with Alice..
Oh about Papi.. can't stand her.

Yes, I really liked Dana too. She seemed so...real. Like, she wasn't perfect, she was kinda clumsy and...you know, she just seemed like a real person. I thought that was cool. I really liked her and Alice together.
Carmen is okay. I thought she was pretty, but...I dunno. She was just okay. I liked that she was a dj though. That's cool.
I don't really like Tasha too much either. She was so grumpy and defensive when she first met everyone. Although I haven't finished the 4th season yet (just one or two episodes left), so I don't know if she changes her attitude or not.
I like Helena. I don't really find her that attractive (I think she's pretty, don't get me wrong), but there's just something about her that I like. I didn't at first, especially when she was with Tina (I wanted Tina and Bette to be together so badly). But now that she's 'poor', I think she's really interesting. It was pretty funny when she was just kinda sitting around Alice's house not knowing what to do, or how to do anything.
I'm so-so with Tina right now. I hated her when she went 'straight' and was with that guy, but now I'm just kinda...meh.
I liked Bette a lot in the beginning, but now I'm not so sure either. I don't really care for her with Jodi. I don't like that Jodi says she can't be monogamous. That would drive me crazy.
I think I kind of like Jenny, in some odd way. I just kind of marvel at how horrible she can be. Like when she went after 'the vagina wigs' girlfriend. I was just like...wow. How can she do that and live with herself?
Of course none of these people are real, but...who cares! They seem real! haha

Me three. I really like Lara, and as much as I hated how much Lara/Dana destroyed Alice, I still can't hold it against Lara because she was just too darn likable. She was even sweet with Alice while having emotionally fucked up sex with her. And nice while Alice was being an obsessive-abusive ex. She had class.
Though it was painful to watch Alice fall apart after Dana broke up with her, she's definitely my favorite character. The actress has brilliant comedic timing and they just give Alice such great lines. "I'm a little low on the sperm tonight. A little low on the sperm."
Dana was totes adorable, and her death was so very, very wrong. I don't really understand why the show wanted to throw away one of their best. It makes no sense.
I'm really not a fan of Bette or Tina. Bette is controlling and emotionally abusive, and Tina's personality keeps changing to fit the writer's purposes. She was okay in Season One, but quickly degenerated in Season Two, IMO, and hasn't picked up since. I liked the changes to Helena's character in Season Three, though they never really bothered to explain where, how or when Helena managed to get a soul. I reserve the right to adjust my opinions on all of these characters (except Bette--she's not so bad now, but even if Tina forgave her for the cheating, I won't) however, as I have yet to watch Season Four.
| xKiDDOx wrote: | | I don't like that Jodi says she can't be monogamous. That would drive me crazy. |
I wish the show would feature some positive portrayals of poly people, instead if just making it seem like they're all manipulative and selfish, incapable of real love until they just meet the "right person."

I love the character of Alice...I agree with the comment about her comedic timing and great lines...one of my favorites "this coffee tastes like poopie sh**".
As for the original topic on the presence of Betty...I think it is because Ilene Chaiken doesn't really care about what the fans think...it's all about what she wants...I used to get all wrapped up in the complete 180's the characters would seem to have...then I heard Ilene in an interview talking about how she treats each season like it's a new show...now the lack of consistent character development makes complete sense...I also recall her stating she most closely relates personally to the character of Jenny...that should explain to us pretty much everything we need to know...

I think Max is cool. I don't find him attractive though... (or her, before he changed...slightly confusing). I didn't like how he got all angry and mean to Jenny when he was on the steroids. That made me dislike him for a while, but now he's nice.
I feel for Max when people treat him badly though. Like at his work, and when his mom died...it was so sad!! I think that it's hard being a lesbian, but I can't imagine how hard it is for someone who's going through the same thing Max is.

how about some Linkin Park, or Funeral For A Friend, or Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (this band has a GREAT anti-abuse-against-women tune called 'Face Down' - very, very empowering to anyone who has suffered from, experienced, this abuse)... could it be the L Word is discriminating? after all these great bands i've just mentioned are all males. is L Word trying to feature grrl bands? if so, why focus on just one? there are many classic and upcoming grrl, and women, powered bands out there. why does it always have to be Betty? are they stockholders? does Betty have the L Word founders by the short-n-curlies?

Betty who??Meh. Don't really give a rats ass about Betty.
BUT!!! I am all about Shane. I really don't understand why people don't see any depth in her. She has proved to be a true friend to everybody, despite the falling outs between the individual characters. She was there for Bette when everybody took sides with Tina, is friends with Jenny when everybody hates her (don't like the crazy bitch either). Shane is loyal, honest and very compassionate. What's not to like about that?? I would be honored to have Shane as a friend. But I wouldn't wanna get tangled up in her love life. That's a whole different story.
And Kate is just the hottest motherfucker on the planet next to Angelina imo!!

i love your Jolie quote Tambob!
i wish Angelina would make an LW appearance.
i'm just so thankful we have LW... faults and all. without it, TV wouldn't be worth watching IMHO. it's tiring to be bombarded with hetero programming, or watching good gay characters reduced to comedic, stereotypical roles. it's nice to have some dyke-centric drama. i'm just glad they got off of the hetero male stuff that went on in season 1.

Yeah, that quote is a good one.
And yeah, I hate all the gay characters in little sitcoms who's only purpose is to be a cheap joke. I could throw up! But I won't.
I think The L Word is great. Jenny is a bitch you just love to fuckin hate, Alice is the funny lesbian next door, Tina is I think representative of alot of women, and Shane exists only to be cool and untouchable. Works for me!!
I think Max is a pretty good character, even when lots of people say: What does he have to do with being a lesbian?? It's all about diversity!
I liked Tim from season 1. Really felt for him. Just cos I'm a dyke I don't have anything against men. I don't have anythig against straight people in LW, cos they do exist. they are all around us!! lol Except for those bastards at Tina's mixer in S4! They can all rot in a big pit.
And almost everybody is so rediculously good looking that you know it's a only a drama set in LA!
