broken 360... :(

my elite that i've had since july of this year died on me today... i'm a little heartbroken as it's probably my favorite console i've ever owned Sad plus i'm highly addicted to rock band, heheh.

anyone else share my pain? anyone gone through the microsoft replacement process? i'll let you know how my experience goes with them.

edit: my friend found this for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0-9EGPQs8A  Laughing

My first 360 died right after my one-year store warranty expired. Fortunately for me, the nice people at Gamestop decided to overlook that and just traded my broken 360 out with a brand new one  Very Happy .

I hear the mail-in process can take some time, but Microsoft has been pretty good about getting things fixed, and it won't cost you anything.  Some advice for the future though:  ALWAYS buy the store warranty on expensive hardware.  Gamestop's plan isn't the best, but Target normally has really great extended warranties.  I had some trouble with Best Buy once, so I haven't really gone to them for really expensive stuff since then.

bummer. i've only had my 360 since mid-august, and it hasn't crapped out on me yet. i imagine it will happen soon enough. i have heard that the replacement process is mostly painless (less waiting times).

i have a feeling that when my 360 decides to tank, i will end up buying a new one anyway. :p i spend at least a few hours everyday on it...it's hard to imagine life without it! LOL.

ugh, I feel your pain... mine died just before xmas, and while I was heartbroken, I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. It lasted for almost 2 years, so I guess I consider myself lucky. Microsoft told me that I didn't register my system (which I can't believe, because I'm super anal about that kind of stuff), so they wouldn't cover the repair. So I bought an elite to make myself feel better. I'll eventually fix my old one and sell it, or just keep it as a backup system if my elite ever dies (hopefully it won't, I made sure I got a falcon chip, but there's still no guarantee)

But yeah, my 360 is a necessity, so i had to do something. I actually just received my data transfer cable from microsoft today, so I'm in the middle of transferring my data to the new fat 120 GB HD. Smile

Good luck! My advice would be to call Microsoft, and nicely but firmly demand they fix it. If they try and pull the non-under-warranty thing, bitch their ears off, and I'm sure you'll win in the end. Smile

When i bought my first 360 it broke three days afterwards -.-  but i could (thank god) return it and get a new one ^^  i generally have really bad luck with my gaming consols lol

thanks for the responses everyone... sorry to hear that there are a lot of unlucky broken xbox stories. it almost makes me want to go over to the dark side (ps3) Razz

i submitted a repair request online but didn't call microsoft. i might end up calling them anyway because i miss my 360 so much haha. right now i'm trying the famed towel trick to try to get it running temporarily. if it explodes and destroys my house and i'm never heard from again, you guys know what happened Wink

i am so heartbroken for you! please call Microsoft. online submission will take longer. they need to hear your pain. Sad

good luck and please share your experience with Microsoft.

i've been so lucky. i actually have one of the first machines ever built from December 2005. the game room floor is concrete, so she ran exclusively on that cold surface from day one. noisy DVD drive, that's unreliable reading discs... so i learned to save often, very often... and backup games onto the memory stick. she's retired now, sitting in her original box. i'm keeping her around as a backup for the elite. the elite's been in the family for almost 2 weeks now.

the only premature death so far has been the wireless network adapter. it died last night (yep, New Year's Eve). it was only 10 months old, yet just old enough to be out of warranty. rats.

thanks for that awesome link to the RROD song!

the 360 i gave my cousin broke. had the 3 rings of death. i had an extended warrenty on it. they said it would take like a month between the fixing of the system and shipping. not only did they send back a brand new one but it only took less than 2 weeks to get it and thats with the holiday mail. after that i put the warranty on mine. a lot better than the service with playstation. i remember trying to get them to fix the original one and got so frustraed with the customer service i took the system outside and smashed it into pieces  Twisted Evil

hahaha isis rising... did you tape yourself smashing it? that's prime youtube fodder right there  Laughing

fyrehawk, you are one of the lucky few! sorry about your adapter though Sad

well, i tried the towel trick ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avWs4-wD15w) on my 360 and it worked!!! for about one day. now i'm pretty much back to where i started haha.

i called microsoft yesterday but i couldn't find a human being, only some annoying prerecorded douche named "MAX" who spoke entirely too casually for my tastes  Laughing  today, however, the status was updated to "waiting for device" which i guess means that they've sent my shipping box. yay. further updates to come Smile

Mine got the ring of death 9 months after I bought it......5 days before GoW was released LOL. I thought I was going to die without it. Microsoft took care of me though. I had my 360 back in 11 days. No problems since then but I'm looking into getting backup, just in case.

*knock on wood* i have had mine since january of last year and have not had any problems with it. been freaked out a couple times yes, but nothing major.... i fear the inevitable though.

so to update on my situation, microsoft has my xbox now and hasn't sent back a replacement yet even though they got it over a week ago. the whole process has been taking a lot of time, but i'm alright with it as long as i eventually get an xbox back that works.

i'm really afraid of my rock band skills getting rusty though so i've started to play drums along to youtube videos  Laughing

i hope this fate doesn't befall anyone else on here! and i'll update again once i get my xbox back with a report on how long it took. so far it's been 21 days since i started the repair order.

console repair

i would just like to share with you some pointers about your broken 360's.

as with everything in this world ((almost)) it comes with a 12 months warranty...however since microsoft build the 360s knowing there was issues with overheating etc - which is the main casue of the ring of death as it over heats inside and then screws up the graphics card.

so to make everyone feel good about microsoft early last years they announced that ALL xbox 360s would now come with a 3yr warranty fo issues relating to internal manufacture issues. An as the console is not quite 3yrs old that includes every console purchased to date.... Smile

I too had a spare xbox that i kept from an existing business that i purchased in May 2006. it died on me in november last year and as i knew it was out of the 12 months warranty date i decided to just have a look on www.xbox.com to see if there was any indication of repair charges and after entering the serial numbers etc off the back of the console i was pleased to find out that due to this extended warranty my "out of date" console would indeedbe repaired FREE.

Quick phone call to the courier, they came to collect it - took it about 3 weeks and i had my own console delivered that had been repaired.

So ladies get online and scoot for the repair section and get them sent back...

One word of warning...they only send your repaired xbox back in a plain white box. I had already boxed mine up in the proper xbox360 box and the courier told me to change it as they would not send it back in that - but its all i had so....if you want to keep your box..just wrap it up in some bubble wrap or something... SmileSmile
