Clichés

Afterellen.com has a blog entry about clichés in TV shows and movies, and I thought it could be fun to share all our favorite (love-to-hate-them) clichés as well as our least favorite (just-plain-hate-them) clichés in TV shows and movies.

The first one that springs to mind, which was also touched upon in the blog, is the L-shaped sheet that all women seem to use, you know, where the guy has the sheet down to his waist in bed, and the woman has it neatly covering her breasts. Unless she´s clutching it for modestys sake, it just looks out of place. And also, when they get out of bed, even when they´re alone, they pull the sheet with them, now wrapped around their body. It´s one of the clichés that I just plain hate, also because it cheats me out of seeing female nudity. :p  Twisted Evil

The scenes where the hero has the villain cornered and is about to kill him, with or without somebody else trying to talk him/her out of it, and the hero then lets the villain live because he/she is the good guy. These scenes just have no tension for me, because you know that´s how it´s going to end well in advance. And to expand on that, after the hero then lets the villain live, the villain then gets hold of a weapon and is about to kill him her, only for the hero to shoot first, killing the villain in a justified manner as it was selfdefence. It´s such an obvious way to work around the "we can´t let the hero kill the villain in cold blood because he´s the hero, but the audience wants to see the villain die for his deeds" dilemma. Also, and this is more of a personal peeve, why does the villain have to die? Why can´t he just be arrested, go to jail, and face the consequences? Dying just always seems to me like the easy way out after all the damage the villain has done.

The father issues. It´s a staple of Hollywood movies, the main character lost his/her father in some form of accident/murder, and is still haunted by that loss, often motivated by it as well, and at the end either finds a new father figure, or discovers that the villain was responsible for said fathers death, and avenges them. The Tomb Raider franchise has gone down that path in the movies, comics, and now the games too, which is one reason I so dislike Crystal Dynamics´ version of Lara.

A man and a woman can´t be friends. If a man and woman work together in a Hollywood movie or TV series, they will eventually become attracted to each other. Also see "obligatory love interest" in Hollywood action movies, another cliché I hate, except the few times the love story is fleshed out and told well rather than just two people being thrown together by the circumstances and falling in love along the way.

The predatory gay character. When a gay character is in a movie, he/she tends to be either the comic relief or the villain, and in both cases tend to feel the main character up with or without flimsy excuses for it. Or if the main character comes off as hitting on a person of the same gender, said person will then turn out to be gay, and ecstatic about the idea of the two of them getting together. Also, I´ve just never found the concept of homosexuality funny, but it just seems to be a recurring gag in TV shows and movies, that the crowd shrieks with laughter when a character gets caught in a gay/gay-like situation.

Well, those were the ones I could think of right now, I´m sure you can think of more.

the war movie where the guy is just talking and being normal then WHAM bullet thru the helmet and skull
Babycha

Yeah, recently I've seen a lot of movies where there was a close up of someone, and WHAM shot in the face! or WHAM shot in the back of the head.
