Cloverfield

what did you gals think of this movie?

i loved it, despite the head swoon due to the cinematic seizure camera work. the 'aliens' were fantastic, and the storyline was satisfying after it moved past the party and into the  'event'.

If it wasn't for "There will be blood" I would say it's the best movie I've seen all this year. Since I have seen that movie I'll just say that, lets say my enjoyment of cloverfield is in this cup right here. And then there will be blood is all the way over on the other side of the room. There will be blood's capacity to entertain me extends waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over here to my enjoyment of cloverfield and drinks it up!

Really tho, the monsters were scary, the music was excellent, the pacing was good once things got going, and I just hope the sequel will explain where the thing came from instead of being like lost where after 15 seasons the producers will completely forget about polar bears and smoke monsters.

The words "shaky camera" completely put me off... :S

It's first person perspective using digital cameras. If you didn't like the shaky camera in Blair Witch Project it will probably turn you off from this movie too.

Blair Witch was actually okay. But if they put a warning sign outside the cinema door to warn me about the crazy camerawork, I think I'll pass. Don't want to turn my popcorn bucket into something else.

Very appealing image, sorry. Razz

I just got this off of Netflix and was totally disappointed.  While the "monsters" looked good--a really clear, non-shaky, longer than 2 second  shot of them would have been appreciated.  I dunno..there just seemed like too much was left unanswered.  It seemed like I was watching a good idea that needed to be fleshed out.  ya, know?

my 2 cents.

Thefremen: nice analogy to There Will Be Blood  Cool

doczira: Cloverfield 2 is rumored to be happening... and supposed to include more info about the 'aliens'.

I liked Cloverfield. I think it's a movie you have to "feel" rather than understand. If you look at it from an analytic point of view, it's  nothing too special, but if you get involved with the story and characters, it'll make you tense all the way trough the movie, which is the whole point of it.

Cloverfield was done by Lost creator J.J Abrams, that is why liked it. There were connections "Easter Eggs" they call them. In the opening sequence there is the Dhrama Initiative Logo on the bottom of the screen. It makes you think outside the box. I don't think there is a connection between Lost and Cloverfield, I just think that he just put his signature to make everyone know that it is his project.

I really didn't like the movie. It was just ehh okay. I saw it an wasn't impressed at all. I think they could of done a better job so ehh. Whatever thumbs down.
yuna

saw the trailer, didn't catch my attention, didn't watch it.
tenshots26

I saw the trailer was like hmm...Another blair witch intake on how they're filming it on a hand held camera. I didn't like the idea so why make another movie like that. It made me want to stop watching it from the stupid camera moving all around. I hate that. So brother made me watch it with him. An blah, still thought it wasn't worth it.

I think part of what made Cloverfield so awesome for me is watching it with the expectations set by Lost. I hate lost now because I've realized that the disjointed way of showing past/future/present scenes without much explanation as to what's happening and why is just plain lazy storytelling. The plot is driven by far too much Deus Ex Machinima and not enough by the wants/desires/needs of the characters. You never stay too long with any one character in any one time/situation so you never get a chance to really examine them.

The one thing that really really bothers me is Hurley. In one future scene Hurley's pops gives him a car. The car's Odometer reads the same numbers as his (winning) lotto ticket and thus Hurley believes it is bad mojo and swears up and down he will never drive it. The man is visibly shaken and apparently phobic of the car. Yet, in an earlier episode taking place further in the future we see Hurley going on a wild rampage in that very same car, being chased by police until he is arrested and we assume this leads to him being in an institution. We don't know why the character did something so against his wishes, we never will, because the producers don't give a shit about WHY characters do things, it should be enough for us that they do things and things happen.

It's like the emotional depth of Dragon Ball Z villians.
