Fallout 3

Just got the game yesterday on the recommendation from a highly respected source. On PC it looks like the game shipped with more than the usual amount of bugs. I know personally I've been able to get many games running which caused a great deal of people issues, but so far it's been crashing quite a bit. Right now I'm re-downloading/installing it from steam and hoping this will resolve my issues. (i also updated drivers, codecs and dx9)
Cullen

I know I found that if I had my pipboy station on the Galaxy News Radio near the beginning that would increase my crash rate.

What OS are you running?

Also a few people said they had some luck with flashing their video bios.  That's somewhat risky tho.

Ultimately, I think that the frequent crashes are something a good deal of people are having issues with and Bethesda will release a patch.  Hopefully soon.  >.<

I know that mine also inevitably crashes after a certain point, but usually only after several hours.  So far the only real solution I've found is to follow one of the 'tips' that Bethesda put on the Oblivion loading screens... "Save Early, Save Often"

Good luck though!  I hope you can find something to stabilize your game a bit before they release the patch, cause who knows how long that will take!

Yeah, I've been crashing now and then but definitely not every 5 minutes. I think I'd be much more dissatisfied with the game if that were happening! D: My friend managed to crash his FO3 before I did and he has pretty much a God Built Machine of Shiny-ness in comparison to mine so know that you're not alone? n.n;

As for bugs where the NPCs in Megaton are falling to death, I personally would find it hysterical but alas, I'm denied the privilege to see such acts of Comedy Platinum. Sad

Oh but I will definitely tinker with the mp3 folder so thank you for bringing that to my attention, Cullen. Very Happy

Ugh but yeah, hopefully someone out there comes out with a mod for character creation. When they do, let me know. PLEASE. lol
Cullen

Haha... indeed.... also with the whole resurrect code in the console is helpful for when Dogmeat kicks the bucket.  Which does happen occasionally when he gets too excited and runs off into a pack of supermutants, or stupidly steps on a landmine >.<  Though honestly it can be safer to just make sure to quicksave constantly with his silly self.

I recommend this thread for other information about how to tweak your Fallout 3 for PC if you are interested.  It goes over how to change the tracks on the ingame radio station, and has links to the various mods that are already available.  Smile

I copied data/shaders/shaderpackage002.sdp to data/shaders/shaderpackage008.sdp and that plus switching to low detail made it run much more stable.
Cullen

excellent!  glad you were able to get the game playable.

so, i bought the love theme for my Megaton house.

.... some flowers....Christmas lights/tree... heart shaped bed in the middle of my floor...

...gianormous glowing wire statue of two lesbians having sex hanging from the ceiling...

From the comments:
Quote:
I get the same error. It appears that even their Patches need some sort of testing before release too. I’ve tried the patch on the US version of the DVD as well as the updated exe from SecuROM. Get the same error on both. The patch does appear to modify some files in the Windows System folder through the Command BOX; however, it doesn’t do anything to the Game exe or anything in the directory.

I have found the primary issues causing the CTD and other crashes. I’ve sent 3 e-mails to Bethesda and no responses. My Computer Science Engineering department took a shot it. I purchased 320 copies and gave them the weekend to figure it out. Here are some of the results;

1.) Fallout 3 Installer installs an older version on C++ Visual 2005 that appears to affect the way the vidcard driver communicates with the game.

2.) Fallout 3 Installer installs a Beta release of DOTNETFX3.0 (.NET Framework 3.0). For users of .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 or even SP2 (Service Pack of the Framework not the OS), upon restarting their system (when changes take place), their game will be quite unstable.
Users of .NET 3.5 or Vista should have even more random crashes.

3.) Fallout 3 Installer installs a non Plug’n Play DRM device manager (not driver but a manager) that doesn’t like any 3rd party codecs (ie K-Lite, WinAMP, etc) and will usually see a CTD when a Hardware codec comes online. This usually occurs when interactive audio (client controlled speech) initializes (ie baby walking to daddy).

4. Fallout 3 Installer installs SecuROM Root kit as well as 8 hidden non Plug’n play virtual drivers. Owners with more than one Optical drive or a sata drive may encounter random drive access issues. Also, Imaging software or any software that may use its own ASPI drive (ie NERO, Roxio, Daemon, ISO, etc.) will have one of the 8 virtual drivers causing the system to do a random CTD. Reason why clients using a cracked EXE don’t experience the same volume of CTD as those who bought the game. However, the SecuROM root kits are still on the system and active. Once the SecuROM is also purged from the system, 60% of the crashes disappear. Unfortunately, they must remain on the system in order to play the game as they are part of the EULA.

5.) Fallout 3 also has its own built in MP3 codec coupled to its DRM to protect MP3’s on the DVD (in game). Unfortunately, the codec was never tested fully with hardware decoders like those of an X-FI. This can be varied by the lack of a hardware audio switch in the game options.

6.) Fallout 3 has 14 memory leaks that we found. Most are small, but there are a few that are quite large. Some areas of the map, the memory counter just spins at over 100 MB/sec. Most memory leaks are around 5 to 10 MB/sec.

7.) Fallout 3 video graphics buffer needs to be adjustable in the options and an automatic cache purger installed for cards over 512 MBs as well as linked buffers from SLI and crossfire cards. I’ve seen areas where names on the screen start to disappear and all you see are “Input Text Here” instead of V.A.T.S. or range or etc. The cache doesn’t get dumped on some maps. Most games dump their cache when a map reload occurs. This can be noticed when fast reloads occurs from map changes. Most users will just see their graphics card run out of memory (CTD and stuttering).

8.) Most games were fault free with a basic XP Pro SP2 reload, and only Critical updates and latest stock drivers. Installed the game and played it error free for nearly 4 days. Upon a system restart, lots of errors showed up. This means that Fallout 3 significantly changes the operating system. Far beyond reasonable accounts as all you can do with the system in not to play MP3’s, watch movies, make a CD or DVD, or play other games.

Hopefully, Bethesda will address the issues more than 100,000 people are having.

This makes a lot of sense. Most of the people who've had problems no matter what fixes they try use 1 or 2 gigs of ram. Most of the people who can run it very very well use 8 gigs of ram. [/quote]

Yessss....yes, you do, kitty. ;3

And only the lunchbox? Not the shiny Survival one that comes with the Pip Boy clock as well?! XD

Sadly...this game has been pushed to the side ever since I started playing Atlantica Online so yeah... But I was never in a huge rush to beat the game either so it works out! Very Happy

Do I need to get this game?  I wasn't an Oblivion fan so I'm weary.

Actually, I've been told by a friend that did play Oblivion that while Fallout 3 definitely LOOKS better, he was rather disappointed as to how 'shallow' it is in comparison to Oblivion, both in story and the expanse of the 'world' you can explore. He's hoping for expansions later that go into some of the rumors about places outside of DC but he would've preferred them to be in the game already. Then again, for his first run through, he did mostly just follow the storyline and didn't explore much but he also expected to be able to continue using the same character after the game was done to finish exploring the world, which the game didn't allow.

So I guess it depends on what you didn't fancy all that much from Oblivion to decide whether or not Fallout 3 is for you or not. Mad

ooommmg I'm waiting for this to land in my mailbox! ugh it wasnt there when i got home today I'm hoping it turns up a bit later *watching the postage tracker*

This game was nothing like Oblivion. In Oblivion the system leveled up characters in locations so that at level 1 you'd enter a cave with huge rats that kicked your ass, and when you go back at lvl 20 those rats are now lvl 20 and all have magical armor/weapons bestowed upon them by the Gods Themselves. Also, in Oblivion the main storyline was INSANELY long and epic, in FO3 the main storyline is just 8 quests long (or so) and the sidequests are much much more interesting. The ending was actually more boring than typical daily activities.

All this being said, it's the best RPG I've played that wasn't by Black Isle studios or Bioware.

I'm absolutely loving Fallout 3 at the moment. I can definitely see the similarities to Oblivion -- right down to some similar sound effects and controls -- so it can be seen as something of a follow-up or the spiritual successor. On the other hand, there are some things about it that are more like a traditional RPG than Oblivion was, namely the levelling up. A few things about it reminded me of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic too. The dialogue choices, the way you have to be a certain level to do some things (lockpicking, hacking, etc). As far as I'm concerned, it definitely works in the game's favour. It feels like it's much more about you and your character, which I never felt was the case with Oblivion (although you might disagree).

If you didn't like Oblivion though, I would say . . . don't buy it. I absolutely adore it but maybe it's not for everyone.

On a side note, I haven't come across the lesbian light fixture. But has anyone met the lesbian ghouls who own the inn in Underworld? Smile

Dude have you been reading too much Japanese Erotica lately? One thinks of the other as her "mother" and was jealous of her "brother" getting all the attention.

I did!  I thought they were super-cute.

Really? I didn't notice that. I knew that Gob (the ghoul bartender at Moriarty's place in Megaton) referred to one of them as his "mother" (I think her name was Carol) but I didn't know the other one did too. I'll check the next time I'm there.

I thought so too. Smile
