Good lesbian movies?

I've watched a few lesbian flicks and most of them were bad. The best one I've seen to date (and also happens to be one of my favorite movies) is Aimee and Jaguar. So, any suggestions?
raddogz

Ones I like are Out at the Wedding and April's Shower.

If there is a lgbt film festival coming your way you have to see "And Then Came Lola"
Babycha

Saving Face is a good one. D.E.B.S is good too.

I've seen so many, and like you, I've found that most of them are bad...  Neutral
Maz

I enjoyed Better Than Chocolate, But I'm a Cheerleader and Imagine Me and You. D.E.B.S is good too. Gia for more serious tone.
NightSky

Coolies! Thanks a lot. I saw some mentioned already (btw, I love Gia!), but got a few down I haven't seen yet. And Then Came Lola looks hot! Well, at least the cover does. It's gonna be released on Netflix soon so already added it to my Queue. Smile TY for the suggestions! If you have more, fill free to spill it. Independent or otherwise.
Maz

there was also Itty Bitty Titty Commitee, i found the brunette lead character very annoying, she just got on my nerves, but otherwise i decent movie.

I managed to track down a copy of the dvd here, where its not actually released and i was deliriously happy, then my ex stole it! (and half my dvd collection!)
NightSky

Well that sucks! I don't think you will see Angelina in a more bare state acting wise and otherwise... Wink The only movie that tops that acting job of hers is Girl Interrupted. She nailed that character to a "T". I think that had a lot to do with the fact that she embodied the character in actuality so much though.
Maz

I loved Girl Interrupted, she did an amazing job there, though you're right, she prob drew a lot from her own experience. Another good movie with a lesbian subtext is Lost and Delirious. I happened to flip onto the movie one late night and found it quite gripping and a little twisted and dark.

Those are two of my favorites. XD I also like Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet.
NightSky

Oh yeah, Tipping the Velvet! I really liked that movie but it's depressing too (well, so it Aimee and Jaguar Razz ). I have it burned somewhere. I  think it's time for a rewatch. Never seen Fingersmith but heard of it. Not too creative on the title, eh? lol
Frances

Couple of favs: Tipping the Velvet, Better than Chocolate and Saving Annabelle.

If you like the flick Tipping the Velvet you should check out the book its based on by Sarah Waters, she is an awesome writer (also wrote FIngersmith and Affinity).
NightSky

I just finished watching Out At The Wedding. Thanks raddogz for recommending it! It was so funny and cute, and that Jeannie girl was some nice eye candy. Wink I was laughing on a lot of parts (it isn't too often that a comedy movie makes me laugh the whole way through). If anyone hasn't seen it yet, I highly recommend you watch it!
naima

imagine me and you, very sweet. Watch it Smile
NightSky

Seen it. ^_^ I wasn't digging on it too much but my g/f really liked it.

My favorite is The Children's Hour. It's not a love story. It's not a romcom...

It's actually a really sad story about these two teachers who run a boarding school. There's this malicious little girl who hates it there, and so she tells her grandma that the two teachers are lesbians.

The thing is, one of the teachers is engaged to be married, and the other is angry about it, amongst other things that cause her lie to be plausible. It's from 1961, so obviously the social attitudes were different back then. The grandma tells all of the other parents who have children at the school, so they all take their children out.

It's a very sad story, but it's really good, and it has Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine in it. Don't worry, this is just the basic plot. I didn't spoil any major points or anything like that.

I really encourage people to watch it. It comes on TCM all the time, so just search for it if you have Satellite, Digital Cable, or something similar. Smile

Btw: I watched Milk the other day and was actually let down. It was a TOTAL dude fest. There was literally only two women in it, one of whom was a lesbian, and the other was that Anita Bryant bitch. Come on. ONE LESBIAN?!?!

Say what you want, but I find that very sad and disappointing.

That sounds really good. I'll definitely have to check that one out.
veggiespork

DO IT.

It's amazing. Hopefully you like film noir though, because that's what it is.

Did you already know the story of Milk? I think that's why most people liked it because they had no idea who Harvey Milk was and what he did (I was one of those people). The documentary on him is way better though. It's called The Times of Harvey Milk. You can watch it for free on Hulu I believe.

I've seen The Children's Hour. It is interesting. Some gay people do not like it though because technically it was sending the wrong signal to gay people, but the thing that boggles me is what did they expect a black and white film about gay people to be like? It ain't gonna be sunshine and roses, that's for sure! You need to watch The Celluloid Closet if you've never seen it. And yes, I said NEED. It talks about the history of gay people in film. There's some interesting information on that movie and on movies such as Ben Hur. check it out. You won't regret it. Wink
veggiespork

Dude, I love Ben Hur. William Wyler is one of my favorite directors of film noir <3

I guess I'll check that documentary out, then. As much as I like Sean Penn as an actor, all that gay men sex and kissing was a total turn-off as well. It's funny; I was watching it with my straight friend and she was totally liking all that.

I didn't really get any negative message towards gay people from The Children's Hour. I felt like it was intended to make the audience angry about their whole injustice, but maybe I'm wrong. Remember the ending? Anyhow, it was still a controversial movie at the time.

I've heard of that movie (Celluloid Closet). I already know a lot about gay portrayals in old movies, just  because I'm obsessed with old movies. There are a lot of hidden gay relationships in Hitchcock movies, like Rope. I love Rope.

Hehe...and Spartacus. "Do you prefer oysters or snails?"

I'll probably still check it out though.
Earrame

Now I want to go watch old movies, but the only ones I have are detective films like The Thin Man and Satan Met a Lady. I should figure out what channel TCM is...

This might not count as a lesbian movie, but I love Planet Terror and theres a lesbian main character in that. Even though her lover kind of was eaten.
NightSky

There was a lesbian character in The Watchmen but they got killed in the beginning too. *shakes head*
Earrame

You mean the Silhouette? She's sexy.
Babycha

Dead sexy...  Wink
Sniper Wolf

Gonna play my comic book nerd card here and say that homosexuality was a much bigger theme in the graphic novel. Off the top of my head, there was The Silhouette/Ursula Vandt and a strained relationship between a taxi driver and her girlfriend.

And, of course, by "much bigger" I mean it was mostly in the background and is now blown way out of proportion for fanwork purposes.

And since every other movie I can think of (and enjoyed) has been mentioned, I'm also gonna play the gore hound card and say I enjoyed Haute Tension/High Tension/Switchblade Romance. Except how they, you know, completely phoned in the "twist" at the ending.  Rolling Eyes

I seem to remember a bit of tragic romance in Memento Mori... but the whole Whispering Corridors series was something I started watching before getting very bored half way through and realizing its being part of the horror genre was something of an exaggeration. It was all cliche and high school drama and me trying not to fall asleep...

i also liked the little lesbian story in V, even if it's sad...

I know what you mean, I saw it when it was first out in theaters and I got a bit teary eyed.
