How to pick up a woman...

It is going to take me a second to get to the point so bear with me. At my work their is a really attractive girl. She is punk looking with short black hair and an attitude. She gets hit on all the time by other girls. Problem is, she isn't into girls.

I am into girls and I never get hit on. Do I have to cut all my hair short and die it black before any girl notices me? I know there is another thread about how lesbians look. I don't thing I'm unattractive but I guess I don't give of a lesbian vibe either. I will attach a picture of me so you can see what I look like and if my looks are most likely the problem. Don't worry I won't be offended.

I believe it would be very informative and helpful If I could please get some advice on how to attract girls. (Plus I think there should be a thread for girls who just want advice on there relationships and have questions about the dating scene in general.) So, to help me and others I was wondering;
How did all of you meet or are meeting your partners? Confused (finally the point emerges)
Arrow Did you go to a bar to "pick them up"?
Arrow Did you meet online?
Arrow Was it a strange turn of events that made it seem like you were meant for each other?
Arrow Did they ask you or did you ask them?
Arrow Were their any pickup lines involved and did/do/have/will/should you use any?

Thank you in advance. Here is the picture I promised. (go here to see more of me: http://s322.photobucket.com/albums/nn420/DustBunny1983/

I met my girlfriend while playing a MMORPG. Very convenient, there's nothing like dating a gamer. Personally, I don't think it would work out with a non-gamer for me, since I'm a game designer. A relationship with someone who thinks games are "childish" or "useless" would be doomed since the beginning. And that's why I never went to a bar to pick up girls. You don't usually find gamers and geeks in bars.

Personally, I don't think pre-made pick-up lines work. I always go with absolute sincerity instead. The girls I dated thought my way of saying I was interested in them directly, without hesitation or indirect flirting, was very bold and attractive. Others think I'm rude. So It depends on the girl. My advice here is to be yourself. If she doesn't like you being yourself, then she's not going to like you anyway.

About you giving a "lesbian vibe" or not, I can't tell only by seeing a photo. It's more about your attitude than your appearance. But again, you shouldn't act like a stereotypical lesbian if this isn't the way you are.

I don't think your looks are the problem. I think the problem is that you are waiting for someone to hit on you. If the girl that you want doesn't hit on you, so hit on her yourself. The worst thing that can happen is you receiving a "no" (or maybe a "eww, lesbian!") as an answer.
acro_circus

I completely agree on what Tenko Kitsune said, it's really important to be yourself otherwise it's not gonna work if you're looking for a long term thing, as for pickup lines, uhhh, I use good old liquid courage... drinking!

I don't think that you should have to change the way you look like if that's the way you like looking, there are tons of people out there with different preferences and tastes. I recently went to Pride in Toronto in a gay bar and I was still asked if I was straight... it sucks but yeah there are always gonna be stereotypes :/

I also agree on Tenkos last point too, there are so many girls who wait to be hit on, so it's important to maybe practice being social with different people (men and women) to see what techniques best suit you for keeping a conversation.

Uhm, ok let's try to answer your questions :O

I met the current girl I'm dating at Pride, we were both pretty drunk and I smiled at her when she was passing so she took that as a cue to come talk to me. She asked me how my Pride was, and how I was and I asked her about what she does and all the other small talk. You can also ask to dance, or if they want a drink, always appear approachable, uhm, like touching her arm(s)/grazing when talking, leaning in, uhm direct eye contact... I find I get attention when I'm not concentrating on it, maybe in some indirect way other people can sense that..?

After that night I met up with her the next day, we went to another club, after that her friends were busy hooking up and she didn't have a place to stay, so we stayed up talking on the street then having breakfast later, that was when I knew she was a pretty cool person, we have a lot in common and have similar personalities, she never really played video games, but she says she's willing to give it a go since it's important to me. So you never know what could happen, so keep an open mind and don't give up :O

I'm on the right track then. LOL joking.

Er... in my case my girlfriends knew I was gay beforehand. I don't think I give off a gay vibe, maybe an unsure one but not enough for girls to randomly approach me.
To answer your questions: I don't frequent bars and I doubt I can pick up anyone in one lol. I met someone online once by some weird coincidence. Was always asked. Lol no pickup lines, maybe I'd throw one as a joke somewhere but not seriously use one.

As for attracting people I don't know =(  I knew my girlfriends before they decided to ask so it wasn't based on looks, just me. I don't get approached either as the gay scene is low here and a lot aren't openly out.

Not your looks at all >< That has never been a factor with me : / but people are different in how they think.
dusty

Thanks for the quick responses. I've always wanted to talk and had questions about stuff like this and no body to talk to. Everyone here is so nice. I'm really thankful  to have good friends like all of you to talk to.

Your a game designer? That is really neat! I would love to get a job modeling, animating, texturing something for a video game. Where do you work?

I'm currently unemployed and studying, since the game design market here  in Brazil is kind of... shitty.

But Ubisoft is opening a new studio here this month. Maybe I can get a job there. I heard they are looking for artists and animators.

Ubisoft thats so cool =D

And feel free to ask I'll try my best even though I don't think my answers can help much xD At least it's something to read!

What? Gamers dont go to bars? Whhhhaaaattt! rofl, sorry, Im a gamer and I soo go to bars. Mind you I do also play sport and sport n beer go together so...

I suck at the whole picking up a girl thing. My first gf hit on me after I announced to a group of friends that i was queer (and given they were all gay i was bound to have a desent responce lol). But since I've moved to a smaller town its been ALOT harder.

I'm pretty certain I dont give off a gay vibe, heck I've had 4 guys ask me out in the last 3 wks (and i caved to one and am going on a date on Thurs but he is very edible so, lol). And the fact that very few people in my new town know im queer - a few comments made early on within my group of friends kinda made me jump bk in the closet  Sad  ).

omg i cant wait to go travelling again next year, i reckon on the road is the only time i feel most free.
Vickie

My ex and I met at a coffee shop that I used to frequent. Much like everyone else here, I don't give off a lesbian vibe and only guys ever ask me out; but my ex overheard my conversation with my friends and learnt about my sexuality (since I'm waaaay too loud about it), and one day decided to come up to me and say hi. No pick-up lines, but she made her intentions very clear.

Personally I won't pick people up from bars since I'm not a bar person. Online, maybe...

And I agree with Tenko and Acro. Be yourself.

Ouch, that would be what I'm doing wrong right now...
Rynnbow

I seem to have stumbled into something of "that girl I experimented with in college once"  kinda lame especially when they are really just doing it to impress guys - ugh. Its probably my own fault though because once I get a little tipsy I'll hit on anyone- So I wouldn't really recommend the bar/drinking scene unless your town has a good gay bar.

If you're having trouble finding girls I'd recommend the internet actually at least on dating sites their sexual orientation is clearly stated so you don't have to worry about getting rejected by a straight girl.

I did the "get drunk and hit on someone" thing! It didn't turn out so good. She was into it but her boyfriend wasn't.

Tenko Kitsune wrote:

Don't worry I don't shy away from letting people know who I am. I'm upfront about it. But at the same time I don't want to seem desperate, hitting on any cute thing that moves. I get tolled no so many times I think I have a talent for liking all the straight girls. One time I had a crush on a preachers wife, how bad is that? lol

So on a side note the girl I talked about in the first post. The one who is straight. today I asked her to point any girls over to me if they hit on her. She said that piratically every girl that comes in gives her there phone number". That is sooooo frustrating, and unfair. But at least she will point them over to me from now on. Let cross our fingers and hope that actually works.

Yeah, this can be a problem. I used to fall in love with my straight friends. Not just crush, really fall in love. And each time I did it I struggled for a year or so to get the girl out of my head.

I agree with Rynnbow what are her secrets o_O lol

Good luck to you *hopes for the best* =)

I think it's all about attitude. Sometimes you have to take the bulls by the horns and flirt. Let the lesbians you're interested in KNOW you're interested, and not just friendly. Especially when your outward appearance doesn't scream DYKE! Its important to help it along a bit.

I am a recent divorce' from a six year partnership. I met her at work, although I do go out to the bars and flirt. Also good places to meet up with other lesbians are coffee shops, bookstores, softball games (lol). I know I know, cliched...but hey...what works...
dusty

I don't mean to get off topic but I saw your art mistresswit. It looks really good. What 3D program do you use? I am also a 3D animator. You can see my stuff at: www.smoothdevil.com just type in dusty and their I'll be.

Thanks!  You're much better than I am! I use C4D, zBrush, Poser. I'm not really a 3D animator, I'm more of a 2D artist who uses 3D elements.
Kaledio_Ruby

Maybe we should just design a bar for gay gamers. Ha ha ha! Imagine the crowd in that! It'd be nothing like Bar On Castro (for those of you who know the SF reference).

Don't worry, you're not the only one who finds it hard to talk to women (I sound like one of my straight gamer guy friends). I've only managed to meet girls online and now things are harder. I work evening hours when everyone is out and about and by the time I'm not working, everyone else is sleeping. I've got a crush on my coworker, but that would make things awkward because we're both supervisors. And I found out she's only interested in playing around.  >_<
Anyhow, just be yourself. Put yourself out there a little bit. If you're a gamer or geek or nerd, be proud of it! Work the fact that you can write a love letter in binary or fix her cellphone. You don't have to go to bars and clubs if that's not your scene. It's 8 years after the Millenium, there's nothing wrong with meeting someone in your online game. =)
Smoogles

I met mine on the internet, though she dumped me, so that doesn't exactly speak volumes for the internet way.
Lucypants

I met my girlfriend at college, we were both 16 and rather shy but we both made it clear we liked each other. Although we were friends first it naturally progressed into a relationship. When I met her I hoped she was gay but knowing my luck thought she probably wasn't! She thought that I was straight when she met me! But we both made it quite clear we liked girls. We are both 18 now and yeah, we've had our romantic moments but we've also grown up together and that just shows us how we are meant for each other, we simply fit. Without sounding too cheesy!

I think that girls tend to go for the look of your work friend because she has that 'gay' look, which is popular. But also girls know where they stand with someone like that, they know she's gay so they won't make themselves look silly by coming onto a straight girl. Know what I mean? Okay, so it just so happens that this time, they are wrong as she is straight, but on the whole it works.

As far as meeting new girls go, I suggest getting out there. Go to some gay bars and make some friends. You'll find you'll probably feel better having friends who are in the same situation and you'll become more confident in yourself. Also you then have someone to talk about girls with and can frequent bars etc.

Idk, I met mine in real life & we were friends 1st. I still got dumped. I think getting dumped is one of those things that just happens. So no bad rep on Internet dating for that one.

See, that's where I fail. I'm a bit shy, so it takes me forever to get it together and let a girl know that I'm interested. So plan B was maybe find a way to get them to talk to me, the other way around kinda thing. But the problem is that they all assume that I'm straight so they don't even bother.

What am I supposed to do, walk around with a sign saying "hey I may look straight but I'm not"?

You should just drop subtle hints. Maybe say something like "that girl's pretty" or" she's my type" something to let the other girl know you're gay.

Aww, can't I shoot the internet anyway?

After meeting mine, we were friends, and then we met.  I still blame the interweb. Look, it's got a large bullseye target on it for 500 points. *hefts boom stick and aims*

This gave me an idea for the OP. You could watch when people look like they're hitting on your gay-looking-straight coworker & then engage them in conversation saying something like "I know! I totally thought she was gay too & I totally hit on her too" or something else, I'm horrible at talking to women.

That's good to find out whether a girl is or isn't gay. But it's even greater if you can spot that and say something before she's all over your co-worker, right? I lose all confidence if I think a girl is into someone else.

I would love to engage in the conversation, but I'm normally not in the right place at at the right time. Bad luck I guess.

Me either. If I don't know her preference I'll ask if she has a boyfriend, if she doesn't I ask "girl friend than?" But I kind of do it in a joking voice so I don't get embarrassed if I'm wrong. Maby I should ask that question more seriously.

Tricky tricky. When it comes to asking "Do you have a girlfriend, then?" I can never pull off the joking voice well enough and end up looking stupid. So that's why I don't go there. Truth be told I don't think I've ever chatted up a girl in my life, because simply I don't know what to say. And when I can get a girl to chat me up, I'm never sure what to say either. Hooray for failure.

Nice one, I saw this shirt once. I was reading an article on a mag saying that we should have some sort of code, like a purple wristband (random example) or something, to make things easier. The author was saying that she wants the other girls to know that she's gay but without having to cut her hair Sigourney Weaver style. It's pretty much how I feel.

Well, as a dork, I put people into categories based on what kind of games they play. By figuring out their preferences, it can sometime tell me a little bit about their character. This is based on my own observation and is not factual in any way, shape or form. This isn't meant to offend since I'm an idiot.

My casual videogame questions:
Do you like video games?
"Yes": Go to the next question
"No": Even if she's gay, she not my type.

What kind of games?
"Tetris:" She doesn't have a single clue about videogames.
The gay hint for her: You should come over one day and play tetris with me! It'll be fun! There's gonna be food~~~

"RPGs": She's the emotional type and would prefer a more stable setting. She's also a strategist and a bit manipulating. Pay attention to how fast she'll spends her money in the game to see if she's careful with her funds or not. Although the money's fake, it strongly reflects how she treat it in reality.  Probably has a DS or PS2.
The gay hint for RPGs chicks: Yeah, Final Fantasy is cool, I have a scroll of Tifa on my wall. Have you ever play GrimGrimoire? It's kinda like Harry Potter but with an entire female cast! Plus the US publishers didn't censor the original Japanese dialog, if you get what I mean (and let them think.)  Be sure to give it a try one of these days.

"Sports": They're a little shallow but athletic (at least, during their "prime"). They'll go to a hyped movie on the premiers and tell everyone it was GREAT when it was the best piece of shit to ever exist. They're "T" heads. Got a PS3 or Xbox360 and still doesn't understand the power of each console except that the graphics look better than the PS2, PSP.  and Xbox.
The gay hint for the Sports chick: They're gay, don't worry about it.

First Person Shooters: They scare me away. Strong people they are.  Crying or Very sad  I don't know enough about these types.  They own a PC, meaning they own you on your pathetic xbox360.
The gay hint for the FPS chick: Not enough research on the FPS chicks to know.

Action and Adventure: Had the older systems growing up. they would prefer if more games had co-op. Thankfully, online satisfied their need to be with someone else and play as a group but they still miss the older days. They still revisits the classic systems. They are sorta stuck in the past. Probably owns a Sega Genesis (Megadrive), Super Nintendo, PSone, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2 and possibly one new console: PS3 to own Heaven Sword and Metal Gear 4. Xbox 360 to own: Ninja Gaiden and Mass Effect.
The gay hint for the Action/Adventure chick: Yeah, I really like Mass Effect, Fallout, and Fable.

Music Simulator: Which do they prefer; Japanese or American? If Japanese, they love anime and manga and has the life love goal of trying to understand Ninhongo. If it's American; they love main steam music and have no problem being introduced to something new. Either way you look  at it, they have rhythm and love music more than anything else in the world, including you..... unless if you fucking get on the drums right now. Dammit, they need a drummer!
The gay hint for the music chick: That's cool how there's an Erasure song (or some other gay song)  onto Singstar (or other game with a homosexual song on it.)

"All of them:" Jack of all trades, master of none. A hard worker, but not too focused on any one things. Sometimes doesn't care for story, they only care to get the game over and done with.
The gay hint for the AOTA chick: You should come over one day and play tetris with me! It'll be fun! Yeah, I really like Mass Effect, Fallout, and Fable. Yeah, sports are cool. Yeah, Final Fantasy is cool, I have a scroll of Tifa on my wall. Have you ever play GrimGrimoire? It's kinda like Harry Potter but with an entire female cast! Hehehe that was great and i will so put some of those questions to use  Razz
I fit so perfectly into the RPG omg, although i had not heard of GrimGrimoire *goes to google it now* heheh

Hmm almost all the girls here who would fall into the 'Tetris' category would probably say   Mario though. And have an older brother who owned the console and that's why they played it.

I forgot about Mario! This girl I was seeing for a split second fell under the tetris category. She said she loved videogame but the second I go to her apartment, i see only a SNES with  one game: Mario.  Lying bitch.

I'm glad to see you guys enjoyed it! Since I work at a retailer, I just put together what I saw with lesbians and videogames. I was going to add more like the "Puzzle" chick, The "Brain-Age" Chick (hint: she's not too bright), Simulator Chick, Stimulator Chick (hint: new year's resolution), the "MMORPG" Chick,  and a more detailed "FPS" Chick, but I got lazy.

All of my co-workers, as well as my friends, know that I use videogames as my way of flirting with people: If I see someone with an interest in games, I take an interest in them. Wink

I was reading an article on a mag saying that we should have some sort of code, like a purple wristband (random example) or something, to make things easier. The author was saying that she wants the other girls to know that she's gay but without having to cut her hair Sigourney Weaver style. It's pretty much how I feel.

We have these things already. Rainbow.
You wear a rainbow bracelet & everyone knows your queer.

but most of the times a rainbow bracelet won't match what i'm wearing... *blushes*
smaggot08

Well it'd be nice to have a version of the rainbow bracelet that also pronounces you a gamer...X3;

Maybe a rainbow bracelet with the words "GAMER" embedded in them in white? Dunno. This has been an overall interesting thread...I...learned a lot. Kind of.

By the way, dusty, you are very pretty! ^^ Though if I knew you in person I would think that you are straight. LOL sadly I think stereotypical looks (short haircuts, etc) play a huge role in whether or not someone thinks your gay. I guess only thing you can do is wear the rainbow bracelet? XD Yeah...Well, I'm mixed, so I have to always be fixing up my hair to look feminine. On days when my hair isn't straightened I get taken for a mean straight girl. << When my hair is done I look like...a slightly less mean straight girl.

xD I suppose internet dating has become all the rage lately. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try (unless you get caught by a stalker, or something...) Though even on the internet you find a lot of fakers. As someone mentioned before somewhere, girls who just get with another girl to impress guys.

I think that's the most shameful thing you can do. (well, not the MOST shameful thing...but it's certainly somewhere around that area)

They can have their diamonds, and we'll have our pearls.
nekotine

hmm...well, i guess i should open this with saying that i initially ignored any interest i had in girls because i was trying to go with the norm and fawn over boys like the rest of my friends. not to say that i didn't have any feelings towards the guys i dated but i must say that while i was with them, there was always a part of me that was hesitant over certain things. so when i got my opening to like girls openly, albeit pretty late in the game, i took it and ran. :3

both girlfriends i've had (not at the same time dangit!) were gals that i knew for at least a year or two as friends before getting into a relationship with them. the first gal was someone i though was either straight or just...not interested in relationships past friendships all that much, but after spending nearly the entire of an anime con attached to each other's hips and being poked at by our friends, we got together and last for about 1.5 years with it being a LD relationship with me living in the SF bay area and her living in Vegas.

the second gal i knew was gay from the get go but then again, it was pretty obvious as i met her in #lililicious on IRC, who translates yuri/lesbian anime/manga. XD but yeah, we were pretty buddy buddy for a few years before anything happened. it was a difficult relationship since is was a SUPER LD relationship with me in the States and her in Australia, and we were both poor with our sucky retail jobs. truth be told, i never actually got to meet her in person but that in no way meant my feelings for her were shallow. if anything, i think my break up with her was the worse i've ever felt in my life. i actually got a taste of the whole 'don't want to eat, sleep or much of anything' type of emo, and boy did it suck. crying every night for a few weeks is just ass i tell ya.

anyways yeah. so i've gone with the whole 'friends first, then try relationship' thing with both the interwebs and knowing them face to face, and they've both met with fail. :3 maybe i'm just a failure of a lesbian after pretending to be straight for so long but i dunno... i guess right now, there's someone i'm definitely into who i met via the interwebs and we've been talking a long while. we seem to get on fine and are pretty flirtatious with one another but i asked her if she would ever do a LD relationship and she said she'd really rather not so gaww heartbreak. :/ but she's still flirty with me and we talk just about every day, and she's made subtle comments about possibly moving after she's done with school so...i'm trying the whole glass half full optimism but i suppose part of me is kinda afraid i'll crash and burn again. ~_~; bah...

as for the gamer rainbow braclets, man...it kind of makes me want to go to Michaels or some sort of crafts store to pick up a bunch of beads to make 'candy' bracelets from my raving days LOL. one of the gals at work who's a lesbian wears a small beeded rainbow bracelet so i probably wouldn't stand out TOO much if i wore one. :3

...i have no idea if what i wrote helped or even pertained to the original questions LOL... n.n;
smaggot08

No, it was interesting to read, nekotine. ^^b

It just occured to me that many of us here (not all....) are a bit too...young to be talking like we'll never find someone. ^^ I mean....lots of people go through many different relationships before they find 'the one' and many still end up alone in the end. That goes for everyone, not just lesbians.....

Hmmm.. >< sounds so cryptic. Great. Just spooked myself out.

Anyways, you just...have to keep trying. ^^; I know how long distance relationships can actually feel just like you know them in person. (unfortunately you never REALLY know a person until you live with them, and even then...)

I have long hair. I wouldn't cut my hair unless. I was really drunk one night an I accidentally was playing with glue don't ask why I would be playing with glue in the first place. But, then again I would be drunk or something. An I would have to wake up to a mess and cut it off.

I agree, ya never really know how you'll meet someone, but the important part is that you're open to the idea of it and you put yourself out there.

As for the bracelet, I'm still up for a secret handshake XD

i've been absent from the forums for quite some time so i thought i would do a little catch up reading...but it seems a lot of the threads start turning into...not what it was originally about...

anyway, i wish i could supply great relationship info but i've really only had a couple in my lifetime with girls (and i just turned 26. eep!) and most of the time when i do hook up with girls it's me getting drunk and then hitting on the hot chick standing next to me. (double eep!) fun for the moment, not so fun when reviewing pictures of yourself on the internet...

i've never really done well with the long distance or internet thing so i just don't even bother anymore. i'm really a touchy feely kinda gal, so being really far away and not having that contact really doesn't work for me.

I have a pin badge that's a smiley face, but in rainbow colours, I still never get a peep or a whistle out of anyone despite it being prominently displayed on my bag.

Mind you, as a person who likes MMORPGs a bit, it allows me to interact with other peeps and to delve and see if my gaydar beeps with them.  It's such a good way to find other gay women with similar interests and to start chatting them up Smile

I'm playing Dream of mirror online quite a bit, and also, even though it's not exactly a game in it's own right, but still serves a similar purpose: Gaiaonline if anyone is interested *hint, hint*
