Lesbians and Yaoi (poll)

Hmm, okay, so I was chatting with my yaoi-addicted gay friend about you bunch the other day, and we both came to the conclusion that we don't understand why on earth lesbians would enjoy yaoi. Man? TWO men?! xD

But apparently some of you do. So, here's a poll!

Thankies!
Sora

Nope I don't understand it either xD
Sooo I'll be in the 'I don't really like yaoi" category. Since um... I don't lol. I've read yaoi as per a friend's request but no enjoyment beyond that.
Uncover teh mysteriess

I've only seen a few Yaoi images on Deviantart, and while the art was good quality, the subject didn't hold my attention beyond 'Oh, that's what Yaoi is', and I moved on.  Does nothing for me.

I don't know why, but this question feels like my straight friends asking why I'm gay and like women.

I'll try and answer the question though, I didn't know there was a particular category I had to be in, or particular things that lesbian women had to adhere to... I guess I was in the washroom when they were handing out the lesbian handbook LOL

I suppose I like Yaoi for the love mostly, when I read any type of story, Yaoi, Yuri, Het, and I feel for the characters and I generally don't mind the physical nature of their relationship... usually I find that Yaoi is written for females, so I like the story progression or way that they structure it...

I assume I just enjoy the romance and love between any of the genres? Some people I know say they are completely gay but Het stuff turns them on, but I suppose maybe you can categorize that too... so are you wondering how I can identify with someone who's not like me? (gay woman who likes stories involving gay men?) I guess it's the same reason with why are there so many women fans of Yaoi, maybe it is that geared towards or written towards thing? Maybe it's the concept of the love/relationship in general?

I guess you can also ask why straight men or women like Yuri and Yaoi?

I don't understand the "hentai" category in this poll...

Here be my ramblings:

I didn't mean to offend or generalise or anything; I'm genuinely curious. I don't believe there's a set way lesbians should behave; but... lesbians and yaoi, interesting.

I've often gladly answered my (straight) friends' questions about why I identify myself as lesbian. A lot of them assumed that I'm a lesbian because I had some sort of traumatic past so I hate men, or "aren't good enough for a boyfriend" (those random frigging online dudes!); but no, I'm lesbian because I like women romantically and sexually -- probably born that way. I don't hate men; my closer friends are mostly straight males!

I'll admit that straight porn or porn with man/men turns me on, too. But like I said in another thread, that's because the male orgasm is obvious. Faking is a huge turn-off for me.

As for "hentai", it's more like... plotless sex, not much love. I'm not sure if that still classifies as "yaoi", actually. Just thought I'd throw it in for good measure.

Hmm, I guess I'm not that into yaoi, yuri and romance in general because I'm not that romantic a person.
Frances

I didnt know what yaoi, yuri, hentai or any of the others were until i saw this post and felt the urge to google. If anyone has some good sites for these they wanna share plz do cause the first ones that come up on google prob werent the best. I'm still not entirely sure i get what they are, some sites suggested they were like comic story form (anime?), others just stories and others still simply just pictures.

I dont think the sex of a person is necessarily the only way to associate or relate to a person/character.

I prob find man/man exchanges more interesting than man/female (but obviously female/female is the bomb ;p).

Urgh, i know what i wanna say but dont know how to put it (its late and I've had too much wine), i'll try again tomorrow lmao.
FullMetalRissa

I love Yaoi. But I also love yuri. I think the reason why I like Yaoi is because I find it cute, I guess. I'm kind of one more for the love than the sex. The sex is good too. But if I wanted to see sex, I'd probably look at yuri.

Sorry if this is hard to understand. It confuses me too. XD
acro_circus

I used to think that Hentai was just straight stuff but it's actually more complicated than that O_O

Oh well, you learn something new everyday.

I do enjoy the romantic aspects of all the different relationships, and I think that's why Yaoi appeals to me, just like Yuri and Het stuff.

I do like the cute stories, I find I enjoy the physical aspect of it more when there is an emotional tie with it.
Seiitsu

I've always found yaoi enjoyable. Possibly because a dear friend of mine is mostly gay, and we talk about everything from yiffie to yaoi. Plus the ukes (bottom) males are so adorable! Loveless, Gravitation, filled with adorable ukes! n-n Besides, if women can be butchy and femme, why can't males do it? It's really funny to see a guy say "Oh, she's hot." "Dude, that's a guy." "Oh crap!" xD

I don't really like or dislike yaoi. It's a storytelling genre like any other. There's some really good stuff, some really bad stuff and a lot of mediocre stuff.

What really drives me away from yaoi is is the horde of retarded squeaking fangirls that come with it.
Seiitsu

>.< Those are annoying.

I hate when men say they like seeing two bisexual girls kiss. Makes me want to slap them.

I guess I just see it like any other pairing. I wouldn't say I love it, but I'm not really against it?

I do get annoyed when it's just there for the sake of two pretty boys having sex. But I'm not that into stuff that's just for the sake of two pretty women having sex, either.

Unless by yaoi you just mean anime boys, in which case I don't really care at all because I'm not really that into anime. I can never tell if people just mean anime when they say "yaoi" or if they mean any sort of slash involving two boys.

I think "yaoi" only refers to anime and the like; and Wiki agrees: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoi I'm not against it either but it's not really my cup of tea.

OMG yes, I hate that too, there's a whole convention here that branches from Anime North called Yaoi North, they are so rabid I want to drop kick them :X

I thought so too, but some of my friends use it to mean any gay male pairing, so I'm never sure what people mean anymore. Thanks!

O_O Things like that make me glad here isn't like the rest of the world xD

In all honesty, I can't stand yaoi. Mostly for the hoards of cat girls that it drags in. (Cat-girl: just barely post pubesent girls who run about spouting random phrases in Japanese and wear cat ears LOL). I've asked  a lot of people about why they like Yaoi at all. First off, it's probably the only thing they can watch where all the pretty boys aren't after one annoying heroine (like in Fushigi Yuugi).
Again, the GLBT community is predominantly gay. So in reflection, Yaoi is predominant as well. Some lesbians do get into yaoi for the romance. The fact that people of the same sex can have those intense relationships.
But if you're not so into yaoi, you want the girl x girl action, without the sex, I recommend some of the following anime which is now available or will be available soon.

1. Strawberry Panic (avail in light novel and manga. Anime is not yet licensed)
2. Maria is Watching Us (aka Maria-sama ga Miteru. Vol 1 to be released on DVD this summer)
3. Kannazuki no Miko (avail on DVD)
4. Best Student Council (DVD avail)
5. Iono the Fanatics (Vol 1 manga avail)

Kannazuki no Miko is nice, but really weird. It's like it's a prefectly regular schoolgirl anime, and suddenly, MECHAS!

But then, I love Shoujo Kakumei Utena and that anime is the weirdest mindfucking thing in the world.

Loved this =)
Babycha

I love yaoi and shonen ai.
MistressWit

Not a big fan of yaoi, but don't hate it. Just not something I am interested in. Although, being a gallery director at deviantART, I'm probably just overexposed to screaming fangirls.
