MMORPG keys and stuff?

MMO Portal has an MMO Calendar as an annual, non-profit fund-raiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Those who order the MMO Calendar will be entered to win one of ten prizes available for each game of either 1 month of free game time or a beta key.

http://calendar.mmoportal.com/

Can anyone explain to me how how these months of free game time and the beta keys work? I don't play MMORPGs and don't intend to, and even if I did, I bet many of these games are Windows only. So, if I did win a prize and they sent me the key or whatever via email, would I be able to give it to someone else to use instead of me? Or is it tied to my email address?

IMHO, this is a good cause, to try to help kids with incurable diseases. I've donated to St. Jude's in the past. And I do need a calender for next year. Smile

Anyone know if I would be able to transfer a key or game time to someone else? It would be a shame to let it go to waste if I won...

Well if you sign up for beta mode on an MMOPRG, you play the game before anyone else. You are testing the game and its features so if there are any bugs, you can report it and the programmers can fix it before the game come out officially.
Jude

Yeah, I know, I do some beta testing for Mac games, but I wouldn't be able to for these, because I only use Macs and most of the games are for Windows, plus I hate MMORPGs! I just thought I would get a cool calendar while donating some money to a good cause, but if I win a prize I won't be able to use it. So since a lot of you all play MMORPGs, I thought maybe someone here would know if it was possible to transfer the key or free month if I won.

Maybe I'll forget about the calendar and just donate directly, like I used to....

I...I really don't need another MMO but I appreciate the offer. n.n;; There are quite a few 'free' MMOs out there but they usually get you by having items that you can only get if you buy their special ingame money, like Albatross18/Pangya with their Astros, but I think those at least cross over to any other MMO made by their company.

hey hey

so i have been biting my tounge....what is an MMORPG?? like what does it stand for?? i know what an RPG is...but like i have never heard the term MMORPG as much as i have in the past month....even the guy at my game store was talking to me about them and i was like yeah cool...and was sooo clueless
Jude

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Basically a shared world RPG where you must play online and much or all of the content is provided by the gamer server (usually run by the company that makes the game). And if the company quits supporting it, that's it--no more game. example: World of Warcraft and Everquest.

cool

hmm sounds really neat....i use to play alot of the old school RPGs and enjoyed them.....so like basically instead of playing the computer you lay your character against other online players???
Margali

You can play against other players or with other players, depending on the game.
Content is usually broken down into 2 catagories, PVP, (Player vs Player) and PVE, (Player vs Environment) I personally prefer PVE, where you and your friends can work together as a group to complete quests or missions. I find the competitivness of PVP too stressful, but lots of people prefer it. To each their own.
nekotine

It REALLY depends on the game, and then what kind of server set up they have. World of Warcraft has a few different server set ups. It started with PvE (Player vs Environment/NPCs), PvP (Player vs Player) and RP (Role Playing). Eventually, they made hybrid servers (PvE-RP, PvP-RP). PvE on WoW means that for the most part, it's a non-PvP environment unless you choose to engage or flag yourself for PvP, or decide to jump into the various battle arenas they have set up.

Now, on a game like Anarchy Online, it's pretty much PvP all the time. There are 2 factions- Omni-Tek (think a mega corporation) and Clan (the worker rebellions). Normally, you would choose one or the other and butt heads but you do have the option of being a Neutral, but unfortunately, the pretty much left you open to attacks from EITHER side. I played a Neutral (being the Care Bear that I am) and was constantly having to dodge attacks from jerks that get a kick out of PKing (Player Kill).

So in some games, it's optional, in some, it's pretty much enforced and encouraged. Some games have specific zones or arenas set up for those that want to PvP but the rest of the world is 'safe' (ex. City of Heroes/Villains). It really does come down to the game and what works with the story.

But yeah, I'm in the PvE boat with Margali. If I wanted a PvP environment, I'd jump onto CounterStrike or something but when it comes to MMOs, I like playing against the environment and progressing through the story. I never go out of my way to make a character build for PvP because it kinda messes up group/party dynamics and functionality. I play MMOs to play WITH people, not against them. And really, a lot of the time, PvP is just too e-penis-y for me. Rolling Eyes

hey hey

very cool....this sounds like something i could totally get sucked into....are there any computer requirments?? like i doubt my crappy laptop would be handle to that....

"And really, a lot of the time, PvP is just too e-penis-y for me. "

Right with you Nekotine, I was a beta tester of Linage 2, A PVP centered game; Beautiful game, just stunning graphics for the time. But the level of hostility was terrible. Chat was a constant stream of taunts, threats, challenges, and insults. It felt like you were hip deep in virtual testosterone.

I'm an unapologetic care bear. Way more fun to play with someone rather then against them. Wink

That's why I don't play games online. I just don't like the behavior of some (many) of the people. They are rude and abusive, and often the language is full of hateful slurs about women and gay people. Even if it is only a few (and it seems that even if it starts as just a few, more join in), it ruins it all for me. Mad

This is why I generally play ANY mmorpg with the chat window minimized, unless that's not an option, at which point, I turn off whatever General/Broadcast type of chat is available. People go on about the chat in The Barrens all the time on WoW, and while I get it, I never subjected myself to it as I turned off all non-guild chat, save for Looking for Team/Group and Trade. And as I mentioned before, I game mostly with people I know outside of the game so we'll coordinate stuff on Skype/Ventrilo/some kind of VoIP. It just really saves on the little sanity I have left. :3

You should play Guild Wars then. Wink You -have- to play WITH others in order to go against others. It got good PvE also. Plus it's monthly-free. Smile
Margali

I played GW for a while when it first came out, not a bad game really, but after a while I did feel like "odd grrl out" because I refused to pvp. Still...free to play, nice graphics, smooth game play. I think carebears should have fun there if they hook up with others of alike mind.

But Ewwwwww those creepy double tailed scorpions that crawled up from under ground to attack you...Bleh, I hate those things!  Wink

Oh! And about the hostility issue. My experiences have been overwhealmingly positive when it comes to online game communities. Sure, there's always going to be an ass-hole or 2 in any large group, and run ins with them tend to stand out in one's memory. But on the whole, outside of the big PVP titles, most people are pretty cool.

RE: homophobic chat in WoW

I've found it also really depends on the server you're playing on. RP servers get less assholes than PvP servers, and you don't actually have to RP on them to play on them. At least, the server I'm on, Earthen Ring, you don't. And if you want PvP action, you can always turn your PvP flag on and play against others with their PvP flag on.

So, yeah, RP servers = less losers. Also, if you report someone for homophobic slurs, Blizzard WILL prosecute. Their policy is "if someone complains, no matter what it is, we'll do something about it". Which pisses me off more than just making a policy of specific words and sticking to it, but there you have it.

Also, there ARE GLBTQA guilds out there, and guilds that are friendly to queer players. Earthen Ring has Faabulous, which is a GLBTQA guild, and my guild, Is Serious Business, doesn't take anything seriously, so we don't care what the heck you are. We pick on everyone equally, including ourselves. Heck, especially ourselves.. Wink
