OK, where does my gaming go from here?

Hi,

I'm a total newbie at this gaming lark, coming to it rather late in life at the grand old age of forty...........something. So treat me gently please. (This isn't really an intro; I thought it was more about consoles so I put it in here; hope that's OK)

I bought a Wii about two months ago after watching someone playing Tomb Raider Anniversary on it. So you could say I'm not exactly a hardcore gamer! Anniversary was my first game and I really enjoyed it, so much so, I got a Gamecube controller so I could play Legend. I've just finished Zelda Twilight Princess (Wii version) this morning, and am also working my way through Beyond Good and Evil.

I've found all of the above games really enjoyable but am a bit stumped as to what to play next. I played about 25% of Metroid Prime 3 and about 15 minutes of Resident Evil 4 but didn't really enjoy either, particularly not RE4.

I'm beginning to suspect that the Wii perhaps wasn't the right choice of console for me as I'm not really interseted in the party games and there seems to be precious little else. I should maybe have done some research first. I do love the Wii controls though.

So where do I go from here? I see little else for the Wii that interests me. Would an Xbox360 be a better bet, even though I prefer the Wii controls? The Arcade version seems good value at the mo. What else might I enjoy playing bearing in mind my comments above?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts,

Andrea.

I have always been a fan of the X-box 360 because of its online game play platform.  A Wii is an awesome system to have since they are still hard to find. Its ok that you are just getting into gaming. Just find a console you are comfortable with and go with it, each console is unique. Hope this helps and happy gaming.

I prefer the xbox 360 as well.  Great online gaming and everything and I also enjoy the graphics and such.  I was a playstation person before 360 came out but after my friends urged me to try a game I got hooked.  Can't wait to see what they come up with next.

I would definitely check out available Xbox 360 games and if a bunch jump out at you, you can't really go wrong with purchasing this console. Large game library and the online capability can't be beat.

You could see if your local videogame store like Blockbuster has a gamer pass (or something similar) - you pay a monthly fee and can rent as many games as you like.

On the Wii, don't forget to check out the Virtual Console titles as well as Wii Ware titles.

Considering how Microsoft is less than gay friendly (feeling the need to protect straight from gay gamers by censorship of gamertags and such) there is no way on earth I would ever buy an XBox.

A decent gaming PC might be a good start. If you're not into party games that much, pcs offer a wide choice of games and I'm sure at some point there'll be wii-like controllers for that, too. (Or they already are?)

I love my 360 but I say stick with what you got until you know for sure that you need to move on. You said that you like party games and you prefer the Wii controls. Have you tried Super Smash Bros? It has a classic 2d side scroll  element that you might enjoy. Also Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is supposed to be released pretty soon, trust  me when I say it's good.

Quick warning: the Wii carries tons of terrible games 3rd-party games. Read reviews or ask around to see what' good for you.

What gaming genre are you mostly interested in?

xbox! xbox! xbox!

Hello,

Well, by the sounds of it you have been enjoying the more 'core' games offered on the Wii, i.e not the crappy party games. So you would probably quite like the Xbox 360. I have a Wii too and like yourself, I enjoyed a couple of decent titles, but I just found all the games to be too 'casual' for my liking, so I got an Xbox 360. I've had it a week and I think already I've had much more fun on it then my Wii!

The Arcade is decent value but I would suggest getting the 360 Priemium. It just has more to offer and will take you further in the gaming sense. It's harddrive is much bigger, and for the extra money, it's worth it. Also if you are planning to take it online, it offers much more, as you may download content.

There are a couple of decent titles coming out for Wii, so I would keep your Wii. If you're like me you may find the Wii gives you something completly different to the 360 and thus it's worth keeping. However, there are a range of good titles set to come out on 360. Such as Fallout 3 and Final Fantasy 13.

If perhaps you want to try some new titles for Wii before you move on, if you do, I suggest perhaps Mario Kart, No More Heroes and maybe Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Thanks, some good points there.

I think I probably know the answer to this question already, and I'll probably end up with an Xbox360 sat alongside the Wii, but it's good to get some feedback from other more experienced gamers. Perhaps my best option for now though is to stick with the Wii and try as many different games as I can from different genres and see if I can work out exactly what I want from gaming.

I didn't realise Microsoft wasn't exactly gay friendly; have I been living on a different planet? I'd like to stick my fingers up at them if that's the case, but my PC is running Vista.....

Anyway, thanks again. Please keep the thoughts coming if there are any more of them. This forum seems very civilised. Mentioning the Wii and Xbox/PS3 on most other forums seems to invite an immediate flame war.

Andrea.

Microsoft's not gay friendly? I don't think that's even the case. The users that abuse Xbox Live aren't gay friendly. Just because they won't allow people to have gay or queer in our gamertags doesn't mean MS is completely bashing the gay community. People will trash and attack you if they find your gay, so why flaunt it in the name?

I have yet to see a game developed or published by Microsoft where they go into a gay populated town and begin to open fire. Nope. Not one.

You you really believe that MS censors gamertags to protect us?
I have yet to hear about MS banning the name "Blackwood" or the word "black" in general from gamer tags. Certainly they must want to exclude that as well, as there are just as many racists playing xbox as there are homophobes.
This is the virtual equivalent to "Well, if you don't want to be insulted and spat on try to look straight in public" - it just doesn't do imho.

Let me quote what MS said about refusing to let Mister Gaywood use his Surname in his gamertag:
Quote:
"We want the Xbox LIVE community to have the freedom to express themselves, but we also have a responsibility to create an inclusive, safe environment," said Microsoft's Stephen Toulouse. "While it may be clear to some that Gaywood is a legitimate surname, it may not be obvious to other Xbox LIVE members. In this case, a complaint was filed by a member of the community, requiring the Xbox LIVE team to examine the gamertag within the context of the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use. Based on the these guidelines, it was necessary for the gamertag to change."

Recall Toulose also referred to the XBL Terms of Use in explaining why user "TheGAYERGamer" received a ban, stating, "Gamertags are visible to everyone and it would be hard for me to defend to a parent of a young child who saw it that the name did not contain content of a sexual nature."

(Source: http://kotaku.com/5010324/microsoft-explains-gaywood-ban Emphasis mine.)

And the terms of use they talk about:
Quote:

-Create a Gamertag or use text other profile fields that may offend other members. This includes comments that look, sound like, stand for, hint at, abbreviate, or insinuate any of the following: profane words/phrases, sexually explicit language, sexual innuendo, hate speech (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, or religious slurs), illegal drugs/controlled substances, or illegal activities.

So gay = profane? Sexually explicit?

Honestly, what they say there is a slap in the face of gay gamers.

Btw if you love the Wii controls, definitely check out Kororinpa: Marble Mania, it's about navigating your "marble" through 3D mazes and uses the wiimote's motion controls... basically the maze/map/playing area is what you control with the wiimote - tilting it to make your marble move about. It's a fun and easy concept and presents some challenge in the later levels. It's also 2-player, so whoever can finish the level fastest. You can unlock extra "secret" levels in single player.

Before this becomes a long drawn out argument about homophobia and racism, I'm going to not share with the world my essay long original post. Instead, I'm going to say this: People are crazy out there, sometime censorship is needed to minimize some of it. Microsoft isn't trying to diss gays in anyway. Hell, they even have a gay group within called GLEAM (Gay, Lesbian [Bisexual and Transgender] Employees at Microsoft).

GLEAM
Quote:
Impact
GLEAM's impact can be seen broadly across Microsoft. GLEAM works to drive GLBT-friendly changes in company policies and work environment, provides support and networking opportunities for its members, and promotes activities within Microsoft that raise awareness about its GLBT community. GLEAM members interact through programs such as:

• Movie nights and lunches.
• Meetings with other GLBT groups.
• Sports and cultural activities.
• Discussions with community leaders about gender and sexuality.
• Financial management seminars.
• Volunteering and fundraising for local GLBT support organizations.

Quote:
Donations
Microsoft donates software, services, and equipment to numerous GLBT civil rights and service organizations, including the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA; the Northwest's GLBT Chamber of Commerce), the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center, GLAAD, the HRC, Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Northwest, Seattle LGBT Community Center, Lambert House (the local LGBT Youth drop-in center), and Pride Foundation.

Believe whatever you'd like, I'm not here to change your mind. Now, who here wants to play Mass Effect?

Hi AndreaDawn. Welcome to the board! We're pleased to have you here. It's always nice to have another addition to an already diverse community. Very Happy It's good to hear that you're keeping the Wii: Try this awesome game called No More Heroes. Definitely not a party game.

Aye, but I prefer it for the bullies to be censored, not the victims. Call me oldfashioned.  Very Happy
