Crossover games: the good, the bad, and the extremly ugly!OK crossover games esp character crossovers have been around since the conception of video game boredom but where o where to draw the line. With the release of Soul Caliber IV today i have seen the downfall of one of my favorite series. Star wars characters, as hilarious as it is to see Yoda in any video game its just beyond my ability to grasp the sellout factor. The game itself has awesome graphics and the engine for the game almost runs seamlessly but the story line is just too much. You would figure the Star Wars Franchise has influenced enough the past thirty years there would be no need to jump ship onto successful games. Soul Caliber has already raped a few characters from Tekken and the Virtua Fighter series but at least said characters flow into the story line of Caliber. I'm not saying video games have to be the least bit bound by physical laws and logic but geez its too damn much. With the upcoming release of Mortal Kombat Vs Capcom or marvel or whatever superhero comic book thing I have to wonder how many series and franchises am i going to loose respect for before the release of Grand Theft Auto: Tattoine, or Call Of Duty: Spock and Capin Kirk? lol

I personally don't care about storyline or background info for any game so I have absolutely no qualms with characters from all over the place showing up in any title. If a gamer likes Yoda and likes fighting games, what's the harm in having Yoda in a new fighting game.

I had no idea the star wars characters' story tied into the the Soul Caliber IV storyline. Weird, but whatever. Anyway, I think the Marvel vs. Capcom games are fun. With fighting games like that you don't really need the storyline, it's just a fun crossover.
I'm not a fan of the soul caliber series anyway, but I don't lose respect for the characters that "guest star" in other games.

Star Wars characters on other games is where I draw the line. Because there are some things you don't mess with, and Star Wars is one.
But crossover isn't all bad. Kingdom Hearts is a good example, it worked for me there. And as for Marvel vs. Capcom, MK vs. DC and so on.. that's not oh-my-god-can't-wait material but surely it's always cool to fight with a comic book super-hero.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the upcoming Mortal Kombat title. i mean MK doesn't have a set story line. It is basically its own world. Also certain crossovers work i loved Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 again the crossover worked well with KA's story line. I just draw the line at having major franchise's busting in on games i love. Whether its a ploy to sell more games or bring in a different demographic ( my fanboy friends did have a nerdgasim over this) they should have at least tried to make the storyline flow. Keep in mind that Caliber is said to be RPG as well as a fighting game. Not so much a problem with the characters although i hate star wars more of a problem with the story not suiting. and i know games are basically fantasy, but the games with the best and more thought out story lines seem to last the longest like Resident Evil, kinda fantasy but the story line as kept me playing from RE1 on PlayStation1 to anxiously awaiting RE5 next year. So my point is do things like that kill the series?
