I love Amanda's social commentary and thought you all might enjoy it too.

Thanks for that! I play GH II, and her articles helped me realize I'm not going to buy GH III and that I really want RockBand. I just wish she would have given screenshots of the character generation. I had no idea it was going to be so good/cool.
I think I'm going to need to spring for RB, now. (Just get the game, mike and possibly guitar at first.)

From what I read, single-player is better in GH than it is in RockBand. So I think it depends on what you want to do with it.
I have GH II and really love it. And the women characters have personality. They're rockers, not bimbos. I started out loving Judy Nails, but have been rather partial to Pandora as of late. And whereas they do have a typical jock/frat boy rocker, they also have a punk rocker (love his radioactivity shirt) with a green mohawk, and a slick, swing-esque/Elvis-esque rocker with a pompador named Eddie Knox. (I'm genderfluid, and when I'm in my male mode, I wish I could be half as slick as he is and have a quarter of the charisma that he does.)
The gameplay is good, (although if I play any decent amount of time, I start having horrible hand pain from the controller. I think I'm holding it wrong or it's too big for my tiny hands or I'm getting too tense or something. I'm sure if I talked to someone who actually plays guitar they could point out what I'm doing wrong or exercises to do to strengthen my hands.) Minimal effort and you can feel "good" enough to enjoy yourself and rock out. Getting better doesn't require huge amounts of effort (at least at first)... just playing your way through the songs gets you better at it at first. (Upper levels? I'm just starting them.)
The music is fantastic, quite diverse, although it does lean on the rock side of things, which is understandable for a guitar game. The unlockable songs are all from little groups and from geek websites and such. (I highly recommend FTK by Vagiant. As the song is loading, the text says "This band of girls from the Boston area would take over the world if they weren't so busy rocking out and starting fights.". Yeah it pwns.)
The only drawback with this game is the price, having to buy the game and the controller. I really do recommend buying 2 controllers if you can at all afford it. You'll totally want to bring your friends over and rock out with them.

if you get the rock band set, they have smaller buttons up closer to the body of the guitar that are spaced closer together. makes for easier playing sometimes. plus the buttons take up the whole fret of the guitar so you don't have to curl you fingers as much.
rock band has taken over a week of my life and it's so much fun when you have other people to come play over. i have to admit, it is definitely the drums that make the game. the obsession has now turned to an affliction and i just can't stop myself from playing. haha.
the track listing is pretty awesome and continuous downloadable content on the xbox live marketplace is also pretty wicked.

I think I might get Rock Band for Christmas. I love GH and all those music/rhythm games. Can't wait to play it!!

i remember being all excited when Konami announced that you'd be able to play the drums and guitar together on Drummania/Guitar Freaks. XD nice to see that you have have the entire band now via Rock Band. but like Cable was saying, RB is more for group play, while GH is more solo oriented. both are awesome in their respective ways.

Since I already have two GH guitars, is there a way to save money and just buy Rock Band the game and the drums separately? I've heard several rumors that the GH guitars are just made better than the Rock Band one, so I figure I'll probably be using them more anyway.

you can use the GH guitars with rock band but not vice versa. the GH guitars seem a bit more sturdy, but i prefer the button layout on the RB ones...but yes, you could def save money by just getting the game. i don't think the drums are going to be available separately for a while

I did a little article on the front page about Guitar Hero III and a lesbian version of it. Also, as someone who has played all the Guitar Hero's, I'd go for Rock Band over Guitar Hero III. The songs aren't that great, there's a fairly annoying battle section in it and the girls in it have been slutted up for the male gamer.
Just my opinion though.

I'm actually really enjoying GH III. I like a whole lot of the songs, and the new wireless guitar really kicks ass. I also like the new battle mode, but all of my friends prefer the old pro face-off. The character changes were really annoying, especially at first, but once I unlocked more of the outfits I found some that weren't too bad (I love Judy Nails' Riot Grrl outfit.
The character creator and drums of Rock Band really appeal to me though...I wonder if the drums will fit in my tiny apartment...

Do you need a new guitar for GHIII? Do the guitars that work with GHII not work? I bought a store-brand wireless controller for GHII... will it not work if I decide to get GHIII?

Oh, the GH 2 guitar works with 3. I just got the bundle so I could have two guitars because I have several friends who play, and it's cheaper to get it in the bundle than on its own.

RB's guitar buttons are not as tactile as GH's, but I do like the guitar's overall larger size. I think after playing GH so much, tho, I'm ready to move onto practicing on those drums! When's Drum Hero coming out??
I love the idea of a "lesbian's setlist" but just "grrl's setlist" is fine, just to be inclusive They do have Garbage songs on RB, fortunately!

The only reason I got GHIII is for the songs.
There are so many irritating elements to the game that sometimes I wonder whether it was worth it. I hate the superfluous storyline mode. I hate the concept of boss battles. I fucking hate what they have done with the female characters. There's so much blatant sexism in the game that wasn't there in GHI or GHII. They took away Pandora and relpaced her with Midori, who is just such a horrible stereotypical portrayal of a Japanese woman/Japanese culture that it's just really really cringeworthy. There's just so much wrong with the game on so many levels.

Pandora isn't in GH3?? I didn't know that. I liked Judy Nails the best in GH1, and Pandora best in GH2. I loved using her in her default outfit with a white flying V. She looks so cool.

I don't understand the appeal of these games, having never played one (although I believe the new Guitar Hero is going to be available for the Mac soon). What exactly is the gameplay? How is it different from playing a real instrument? Does it teach you how to play a real guitar or is there some sort of story or what? I've played guitar most of my life, and also a few other instruments, and although I have read several reviews of these games, I just don't get it...
Anyone care to enlighten me?

I'll try lol
Ok so here is a graphic for you to make it clearer
The colored buttons are pressed in time to the colored buttons that travel towards you on the games screen..
..... if it's yellow hold yellow and hit the strum bar as it gets to the line, if it's blue, hit blue and the strum bar - sort of like holding a chord on a real guitar and strumming I guess, but takes no actual guitar skill to do. On hard songs you also have to hold two buttons at once (or more?) and strum. You also have the tilt feature... if you get so many notes in a row you can tilt the guitar neck up ie in rocking out stylee and this gives you an additional mode. You can also use the whammy bar (I think it's called that) and I think that gives you extra points too.
TADA!! There you are and I don't even play GH haha
Duh I should add.. when I try and play GH I might as well have toes for fingers. The reason I know how to play it is because my whole family LOVE it. I think it's the feeling of rocking out they enjoy and the buttons are generally pressed in time to the music, so it's cool. If you miss a button press there's no guitar music in the game, so if you keep getting them right, the song sounds full and you don't sound like a jerk lol

This clip illustrates how it works very well.. it also illustrates that this child plays it WAY TOO MUCH LOL
Enjoy the GH Clip.. it's pretty amazing.

Thanks, GirlyG, I see how it works, now--sort of a hand-eye co-ordination matching game, but you are rewarded with guitar music in tune if you do it right.
Nothing like playing a real guitar, though. I guess I was expecting it to be like a guitar synthesizer or something else where playing the instrument was more realistic, with a cool storyline. Kind of like interactive Tommy or music video or something.
