Some pics of where I've been...

Last week, I visited the Great Basin bordering Nevada and Utah and spent a little time in Yosemite. It turns out I found a new love--hiking! Hiking at the Great Basin was the coolest experience of my whole trip. It wasn't easy but it was a great feeling reaching near the top of the mountain! The trail disappeared after that, so I couldn't make it to the top but the end of the trail led to a pocket of snow in the middle of the summer! Yosemite was gorgeous and unlike any mountains I've ever seen but it was oh so crowded. Yosemite had some asphalt paved "hiking trails". :\ I actually enjoyed the Great Basin better because it still has a wilderness feeling left in tact. Actually, that is why I chose the Great Basin. I saw a national parks rating on National Geographic that rated the true naturalness of the parks and rated the most commercialized parks. Great Basin was #3 on naturalness I believe.

You can see this on your drive through Yosemite (this is taken from a moving car).

Visited the cave in Great Basin. Very cool, dark, and scary when the tour guide turned all the lights off. Confused

A cool tree on the hiking trail at Great Basin

Overlook after hiking for over an hour

This trail led up to near the top of the mountain where I found the snow. It was devoid of hikers since most stopped before going up the Glacier trail (too far), but I was determined to make it to the end and got very sunburned in the process. Embarassed

A stop off at Yosemite cliff. You can't tell from the pic but those mountains are huge! I'm on the left.

A tiny waterfall with a pack full of tourists surrounding it.

I got to ride on a carriage Very Happy It left plenty of dust in my face!

I love walking and photography, though the nearby landscapes are not as impressive as those ones Smile

Lucky! I hiked 3.5 miles in the Sleeping Bear Dunes a few weeks ago, without shoes or water. Hehe.

At the end of the trail was Lake Michigan and I didn't think to drink any of the water. Me and my two friends swam for a while and decided to hike back. But they hiked faster than me, so I was alone except for when we were swimming. It was really peaceful.

When we FINALLY got back to where all the tourists were and the parking lot, I got a charlie horse in each leg as I ran down the last dune to get a drink from the drinking fountain. 4-5 hour hike in 90 degree weather without water. Smart.

But you're right. Hiking always makes you feel so satisfied afterwards Smile

OMG though. We had a scary experience later that day when we went to a shorter trail and ended up getting lost during a thunderstorm. Luckily we survived and made it back to the car.

I'll post some pretty dune pictures later. My SD card isn't with me.

Those are some nice scenic views. Are they from near where you live? If so, you are a lucky girl. I especially like the last one. I think prairies are so serene and peaceful.

veggiespork how did you hike without shoes??? Dude, there were way too many dark crevices during that hike for me to even think about taking my shoes off.  Shocked To hike in 90 degrees for me, I think I would have died the first mile. When I got near the top of the mountain, I thought I heard running water but as I got closer, I realized, "Hey, that's not water, that's the wind and it's picking up! I don't want to blow away, I'm outta here." lol

Post pics if you can find em' girlie.

ah great basin and many other places where one of hte reason i really liked growing up in utah, you can live in downtown SLC and be less than 4 hours away from red rock canyon type hiking or great basin type or a lake (NOt the great salt lake, bleh ew) theres even places like 20 min from downtown, but they're a lil more comercial. i want to find places in so cal, because i miss it.

Hiking in California = SWEET.

Yeah...sand is supposed to get rid of your calluses, but in my case, I think it created them.

There were so many steep dunes to climb. I started to believe that the water was just over the next one, just so I would keep going.

I'll snatch my memory card back from my dad tonight. I got some great shots, especially when the storm was coming. The sky looked really cool.

Ohhh i love hiking too! Well, anything outdoors really, but hiking is definatly one of the tops. Here's some pics from a hike i did through Tiger Leaping Gorge in southern China, it was so friken awesome. The Chinese have plans to dam the gorge, which is why i got over there quickly to treck it before they did. I dont think they have gone ahead with it yet though, i hope not, they will surely lose some of the most stunning country China has to offer. Its a 3-7 day hike, depending on if you do return and if you take a day to explore at some of the villages along the way. The first day is super tough, you hike from like 1000m up to 2700m zig zagging up the mountain face.

Those are about an hour from where I live Nighsky, as I live on the edge of a huge city here in the UK.

There's a few more pics from other places on my flicr page, the ones from the Malvern Hills are quite nice too.

you're so adventerous Frances I envy you! Smile   Can't wait till I graduate and have money to be spontaneous with. Its things like thinking about going on spur of the moment trips to China that keep me pushing through school
veggiespork

Dude, I envy Frances too :< I want to hike in China.

Hot Chick

Dunez

Tall Dune

Hot Chick on the Beach

Flat Dune

3.5 miles of this shit.

There was this hot girl who walked way ahead of us and we saw her at the beach just sitting there with a notepad, writing. It was very interesting. I wanted to know what she was doing, but I didn't want to bother her in her moment of inspiration ;3

It's not creepy that I took a few photos of her, right? I was just takin' some pretty dune pics! Very Happy

My pictures look very wimpy next to Miss China over here. And her hike was way more hardcore, too. lol.

And here's smaller pics of when we were exploring the dune shores...

Lol, i giggled at that  Razz

I reckon its just as aawesome when people get out and explore their local area though. I live in a 'biodiversity hotpsot' yet know sooooo many people who never get out into the bush to enjoy it, they'd much rather watch foxtel >.<!

I'll post some more 'close to home' hiking then....urm when i remember to bring my flash drive home from work  Confused
NightSky

Holy smokes! Frances, that must have been an awe inspiring hike through nature. That mountain pic is gorgeous. That is so awesome that you hiked there.

veggiespork, is that the lake? It looks like an ocean. That is an awesome place to end up! It makes me wonder why I was so exited over a patch of snow.  Rolling Eyes
veggiespork

Hehe. It's Lake Michigan. The only reason the waves were so big was because there was a storm coming. Yeah, it was a sweet spot, and very secluded, but I'd rather hike in China or California, dudes. Razz

Ya ya! Get your flash drive!
Earrame

You people and your hiking. Sailing is the way to go. Theres nothing better than being out on Lake Michigan in a sailboat.

I like sitting at the bow of the sailboat, I just have to watch out for the jib when the boat comes about. Getting hit in the face by a sail is not fun.
lacrossegirlie

i'm lame and dont have pictures, but i have been sailing once, as a part of a race, it was AWEOSME, but it was in the ocean, so many ropes to remember though! i knew some of the terminology from the marines though.

Sounds like an AMAZING RACE lololol.
lacrossegirlie

we got second or third, despite my efforts to help!  Laughing
veggiespork

I WISH I could have gone sailing, but we don't have a sailboat. My mom used to sail on lakes when she was a kid. Sad I'm jealous.

A few days ago I did a fund raising trip across the UK to raise money for a charity close to me.

over 2 days I went over 1800 miles, Some of the pics in Scotland are fantastic, but are taken from the train so the quality might not be perfect.

I only got 2 hours sleep, oce we got into Scotland, the scenery and the wonderful morning was far better being appreciated than snooze in the sleeper berth

some pics here, but flickr moaned I'd exceeded my monthly upload limit Sad

It was a wonderful trip and my target of £250 was smashed, and is now over £500 raised Very Happy
TinGirl

I took a camping trip during September but as I'd exceeded my upload for that month I've had to wait till now to upload my latest pics.

You'll find them here
