Technical stuff to enhance ur gaming!

Ok, so I'm in need of a bit of help.

I discovered PC gaming this year (having previously been a console player) and I'm completly sold. However, i dont think my hardware is up to the task. Recently the developers of my main game mmorpg Last Chaos upgraded one of the 'worlds' and it now has so many monsters and high graphics i freeze upon teleporting there and cant move. I've always had a bit of lag, mainly when there are alot of people playing (same with Guild Wars) but nothing like this.

I have a Toshiba laptop, no additions, no extras. I can prob find out ram size and video card info if that helps. I'd prefer not to buy  a new comp if i can get away with just adding something,

So, I guess i wanna know what you all have and thus what I need to improve what i have.

Cheers  Razz

When I played Last Chaos I found exactly the same thing.  I just waited a minute or two for the world to catch up and all that.

Unfortunately the only solution to this sort of thing is making sure all your drivers are up to date, and maybe turning off all fancy-fying options for LC, even reducing the resolution helps a bit, but makes the game less shiny.  But if that doesn't fix it, and you have more than the recommended specs, then well, not much will apart from the dreaded upgrade..

Of course the other option is finding a different MMORPG.. like Domo (I did play this, and still have characters there somewhere) and I recently got in to Holic.  But Holic has weird things happening as it's too beta-ish.

I used to play Shaiya too, but it got really boring I found.

Hey thnx, I tried ur suggestions but alas LC looks like utter c**p with all the graphics turned down Sad

So, I'm verging on the dreaded upgrade then, verging... definatly not a definite lol. But what do I get if i do upgrade. What comps/drivers/specs do you all have?

Well my comp is a few years old now, so not very relevant to this, sorry.  But it still works with most MMORPGs, so maybe it is.. I dunno.

The two things which would help you the most would be CPU, and Graphics card.  Most machines come with about 1 gig of memory or more these days too.  And if you run the dreaded Vista then you'll need that much memory at least, to have a decent gaming experience.  Unless you're just in to pac-man, and space invaders of course Smile

If you really want to compare, my specs are:-
CPU: Athlon XP 2800+
Memory: 2 Gigabytes DDR 400mhz
Graphics: ATI Radeon 9800 AIW Pro with 128 meg memory

This might be a little dated by the comparison to most 'up-to-date' P.C's, but it does what I need it to fine.  Including 3D modelling/rendering, and handling large images.  Though I'm considering buying a new one as soon as I can scrape the pennies together, it needs the extra chocolately goodness, for those fractal images and such.

Laptops are a little harder to upgrade than desktops, mostly because the actual components usually tend to be all in one.  Usually, RAM is the only thing you can get away with upgrading, but you'd probably be voiding your warranty in taking it apart to put in new parts.

If you do get a new laptop and are planning on using it for gaming, you'll want to make sure that you don't have an integrated video card.  You'll want to make sure that your video card has at least 256mb memory, if you want to be able to play a game at higher settings.  My card is an nVidia GeForce 8600 GS with 512mb, but I still have some issues at times when there is a lot of activity.
