The Watchmen

Just got back from seeing the Watchmen. I was totally amazed by this movie!
Just a couple hours ago I wasnt sure I wanted to go but I'm glad I did. This movie goes down as a great work of art in my book. I highly recommend it!
Babycha

ohh I can't wait to see it. Hopefully I'll go this weekend or early next week.

I went to a midnight screen and let me just say, I did NOT read the comic book prior to watching the movie ON PURPOSE because I wanted to enjoy the movie as a movie, not try to play the 'what is/isn't there' game the whole time I'm watching. That being said, my opinion is based as so, not as someone that has read the comic book.

So let me start by saying that I LOVE V for Vendetta. The movie. I have yet to read the comic for that as well. But as a movie, I thought it was spectacular. It was a complete package. Action, drama, real and developed characters you cared about, a well flowing story/plot, it was very visually stimulating as well and I felt that it got the Message/Moral™ across just fine. And it had the lesbian couple, LOL. After seeing that another work of Alan Moore's was going to be adapted as a movie, I got fairly excited and expected something of the same caliber, if not better.

Sadly...I was pretty let down. Visually, the movie was very appealing but it rather flopped on everything else, except for the Message/Moral™, which was kind of force fed to you through out the entirety of the movie. I think the only character we ever got to really get a complete feel for was Rorschach, for which I'm grateful for or I'd probably end up liking the movie even less. In the end, he was the only character I really gave a damn about. The rest of them, save for The Comedian, felt so...blah to me. I felt like a lot of scenes could've been cut out for further character development and/or what lead to the 'romance' of Night Owl and Jupiter, if you can call it that. To me, it felt more like a rebound relationship with Jupiter falling back on the nerdy, introverted guy that always had a thing for her but didn't say anything because she was already with the human glowstick.

Speaking of the human glowstick, MAKE UP YOUR MIND. Either have the penis hanging out there for all the theater to see at all times or have that black half speedo on. I can understand the suit for the interview but why bother covering up while fighting the Vietcong and not for...everything else? It was just WEIRD. I swear, Hollywood is getting a little to penis happy with the whole full frontal nudity allowance thing...

So yeah, that's me $0.02. Shallow characters make a shallow story flow, even if the Message/Moral™ is spelled out to you in blatant alphabet soup at the end of the movie. Love it, hate it, print it out and burn it in effigy if you like but that's just my opinion of the movie on it's own merits. I -will- be reading the comic as soon as I can get my hands on a copy to hopefully fill in some blanks in the near future.

@nekotine If you read the novel of V For Vendetta, you'll see how right Alan Moore is about adaptations of his stuff being awful, and how painfully thin and 1-sided that movie is compared to the original

The first 2 hours were great, then it slowly wound down to a cop-out-esque ending that irked me greatly. Eth out.
Rynnbow

I've read the comic and I still liked the movie Very Happy  It was like the comic was used as a storyboard for the movie; they hardly changed anything (obviously the ending was a little different and the pirate comic was gone). Also the actor who played Rorschach was brilliant! Like the character walked right out of the novel.
Thisbedutch

I've read the comic but am keeping an open mind about the movie - I've seen a range of opinions from a complaint about using an "awful cover" of Hallelujah (they used the original in the soundtrack  Rolling Eyes ) to people saying that they prefer the changes that were made.

I admit to preferring the Silk Spectre's outfit in this though. And my reasons for preference are not entirely wholesome...

Yeah, I'll get around to reading it one day but as I said, I judged both of the movies on their own merits, without the influence of knowing the full story. That being said, as far as stories being told in the movies, I felt that V for Vendetta provided a more solid and steady flowing story than Watchmen.

I know there are elements that were left out of the Watchmen movie that kind of gave light/helped to support/reflected what some of the characters were going through at the time but due to time constraints and other things, it was decided it would be left out of the movie but adapted as an animated feature on the side. Maybe that would've helped me to better understand the characters I felt the most detached from?
Thefremen

Having never read the comic I thought the movie was awesome on its own. I was thouroughly entertained and judging movies based on how entertaining they are, it was the best film I've ever seen.

I'll read the book later, and I doubt that it will make me hate the movie the way reading V did.

Now they need to make Transmetropolitan into a movie Smile

This pretty much encompasses my opinion of the movie.

I agree..

I thought it was good...but just ok..

All though it was almost 3 hours long, I wasn't bored, the characters where very intriguing, Rorshac being my favorite. I don't know what to think about "twiggy".

who's twiggy? the judge from top model??

I STILL haven't seen Watchmen! argh!
acro_circus

I enjoyed watching the movie, but maybe that's because I went into the theater hearing all the bad reviews about it (both critics and friends), haven't read the graphic novel yet, so I don't know if that influenced it either :O

Did not enjoy the IMAX experience with the giant blue penis but what can ya do hahahaahhahahaa
Thefremen

A lot of webcomics are doing Watchmen parodies. PVP is pretty good if you know a lot about print comics and publishing, KC Green's is better if you just know about watchmen. http://gunshowcomic.com/d/20090309.html this is where the arc starts.

COOL..

Cool  Cool  Cool

I hope you like it!
Babycha

I liked it. I've heard alot of bad things, but I can appreciate it as a companion to the graphic novel. Like the review nekotine linked, I think it would've had to be a mini series to have the depth people wanted.

I went to go see this movie with my sci-fi and anime club. During the credits when The Silhouette steal the nameless sailors’ kiss, all of my friends were nudging me going, "Hey, this is your type of movie, eh?" When we saw Ursula and her lover murdered with realized that we had greatly underestimated this movie.
Esotar

I saw it

I read the book long ago and enjoyed it. The movie, as weird, messy, beautiful as it was....well, I liked *parts* of it quite a lot. They really screwed the pooch on the ending though, their ending negated everything that went before.

IDK if they used the same ending as the book it would just come off as rediculous and cartoony.
Stayponie

Wow... I guess I'm the only one here who hated this movie. Smile

I will also link to a review that pretty much reflects my own opinions because I'm too lazy to talk about all the things I didn't like about it.

I don't really see the contradiction here no offense.  He covered it up when he was a super hero and working for Nixon.  With Nixon being a Republican I think we can understand why he didn't want press photos of a giant penis helping him win his war.  He only covered up to please the humans, other wise he doesn't see the point of using clothing being as detached from humanity as he is.

Frankly, I'm one of those people who felt this film was fantastic.  I loved the strange, alternate Nixon universe as political commentary, the visual imagery, and all the characters to varying degrees.

Some people I think were expecting a little bit too much though.  I mean have you seen any other super-hero movies?  They're all usually crap, this was the best one I've seen so far.  If you think this movie sucks and liked stuff like Iron Man and X-Men more, I really don't understand where you're coming from, but that's just my opinion.  I don't expect anyone to agree with me.  I think people should at least be happy from the perspective of a comic book nerd that something this unrestrained got released instead of being dumbed down for the kids and public consumption.  I think this movie will definitely turn a profit, so it may mean more movies like this, although maybe with 80 million dollar budgets instead of 130 million.

I will also mention that I think the director shot the entire graphic novel minus pirate comic bits, I believe.  He had to trim it down for the theatrical version though.  So hopefully we get the whole thing on Bluray at some point that's fleshed out a bit more.  I honestly don't care about a film being long as long as I enjoy it.

I think Moore said once he considered doing a prequel that would focus on the earlier super heros like the Silhouette.  Too bad that never materialized.  Maybe they could still make it into a film though, although I'm sure Moore would be super pissed about that.  lol

Watching this again on DVD. Will watch the extended cut later. I forgot just how awesome this movie was.

Also, the comic is great.

I wish more people understood The Watchmen. Everyone keeps "but they didn't have powers..."

That's kind of like re: Hamlet "why didn't he just explain his feelings to his uncle and go to therapy with him?".
Earrame

I watched the Director's Cut last night. I still wish the giant squid was in the movie, but that would have made no sense at all.

When you really think about it, the Russians would have just seen the giant squid attack and said "OK NOW! Hit 'em while they're down!".
