What was your first console system?

I'm sure we all started gaming somewhere and had one particular console that got us interested into the whole experience. So, for you personally, which console was it?

I'd say for myself it was the Sega Mega Drive, I remember playing The Lion King on that thing for ages! I've recently been tempted to but another one for about £15 just because I remember how much I loved it when I was younger. Okay, so it may not have amazing graphics like the Xbox 360 or the PS3 but I thought it was awesome. I also loved the fact that if the game wasn't working you simply just blew into the game and it worked fine!

Please share you're early gaming experiences. =)

Believe it or not, my first "video" game was on a mainframe at college: one of those RPG DnD games where you play a D and must move between dashes to kill Xs and try to find Zs or something like that. There were also text-based adventure games ("You see a lake, there is a bird singing" etc.) I hated those. I could never figure out what to do to accomplish anything and they drove me crazy.

Played some old Apple II stuff RPGs with real (pixelated) graphics. Then got a Mac (Powerbook 100), where I there were some good games (Robosport, SimEarth, M4 tank sim, King's Bounty).

Then I got a Gameboy as a gift --my one and ONLY console I've ever owned or played. There were a couple of strategy games for it that were okay,...

but
then I got a Power Mac and then 2 more Power Macs over the years, and who needs consoles, when you can have a Mac?

My first was the NES. I bugged my parents like, forever to get me one. And finally my dad came home one day with a box and in it was an NES, two controllers, light gun, and Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt. I was SOOO EXCITED!! haha

The old Atari system, I still remember playing "Tank" on it, and some game where you shoot down flying saucers, can't recall the name though.

I had a friend who had the original Pong game, I remember how amazing we thought it was at the time, lol.
GirlyG

My first console contact was probably the Atari 2600 as well. My first true gaming love was probably the Commodore 64 (actually 128, but I only ever really used it as a 64), then the Amiga and Sega Mega Drive.

Still got all my Mega Drive games, but they're in a box in the garage. Embarassed
vampiresslupus

An NES that my dad had and gave to me. I had Mario and Duck Hunt (the combo) and actually a lot of other games that I can't really remember right now. I miss that console... it broke Sad
nekotine

First system I played on was an Atari but the first system I -owned- (wasn't shared between my brother and myself) was the old brick sized Nintendo Gameboy.
Gadget Girl

My first one that I bought was the Sega Master System II which I totally adored. It came with Alex Kidd and I also bought Sonic with it. I remember being amazed at the graphics and at how fast it was lol. When I was much younger my parents bought me a Binatone, a Commodore Vic 20, Amstrad CPC464 and a ton of game and watch stuff. They were supportive of my gaming habits lol.
Rogue

Atari 2600. Pitfall! was awesome. Very Happy

Well, my parents had some Coleco 6-in-1 gaming thing when I was really really young, but my first platform was the NES that I got for Christmas in 3rd grade.

I still have it and play on it. It's good times.

nekotine

i think this was my favorite controller but that's because i loved playing Kaboom! more than any other Atari game. XD

tomboy.for.equality

I did my first gaming on a Commodore Vic 20 with Space Invaders and their knockoff version of Pac-Man.  I then played on the Atari 2600 at my cousin's house.  I loved Pitfall and also Contra.
zeero

my first console was an NES (still have it!) followed by a gameboy.

uncle festers quest, baby!
Gedren

Gameboy.

And then PC. I don't own any other consoles yet((
Darkfaerie129

I think my first console i ever played on was the atari... my dad is a huge geek so naturally, i am too! I know that we also owned the first nintendo, and then the super nintendo....actually i think i have owned pretty much every nintendo console...

we never owned anything sega though. not sure why just never got into it.

But right now, i heart my xbox. Still up in the air about PS3 and I own the wii... but i have to be in a mood to play it.
Jessnesss

blueingy

NES ... got it for Christmas when I was about six years old.  I'm still amazed by that, because my mother was always a fan of getting me "useful" presents: umbrellas, PJs, etc.  Loved Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, but I was really smitten with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game and Mario Bros II.  Classic!
zeero

i got my NES when i was 6 as well. played so much i got blisters on my thumbs, no lie! Laughing
brinstar

Atari 2600.

tha commodore is old school... i wasnt even born... commodore was competing with atari since commodore.been out 1st.. Thatz the real history b4 them other systems came out Wow Contra OwNz
Nimbo

The one i remember best was the nintendo 64. I used to battle my sister in mario kart, so much fun. I had a gaming consol before that, but i'l be damned if i can't remember it anymore.. could be the sega megadrive.
DeviAchariya

Mine was also NES Smile

I still have it, but it's not in the best condition to play with.  If I set it on the floor, as soon as someone walks too heavily and shakes the floor, the system would freeze.  That's pretty frustrating seeing how you can't even save games back then!
Alter Egotist

I started gaming on my siblings' 2600. The first one that belonged to me was the NES. I still consider it to be my first love  Wink
Sora

Gameboy for me. One word, Pokemon. shhhhh Wink

After that was...the Ps2. Pretty lame but as the only gamer in my family it took a LONG time for my parents to get me a console.
les spartan

FIRST ONE WAS THE NES.THE NEXT YEAR GOT THE SEGA AND I WAS ON MY WAY.
Tambob

Sega still rocks!

My dad had an Atari 2600 and a C64, which he then let us ruin.Smile I was only little at the time. But our first real Console was the Sega Mega Drive. I still have it (plugged in under the PS3 and Wii Wink ), and we still play Ecco and California Games on it regularly.Smile
Oh, and Street Fighter 2 turbo!! And the old Mortal kombat. lol

Tambob
Sami

SNES. I got it when I was 8 right after it first came out. Smile My first games were Super Mario World and Mario paint. Loved em! I'm still a Nintendo fan today, but PC games are far better....*dissappointed at Wii game selection* Oh well, I still play SNES roms all the time. Tales of Phantasia is my favorite!
Taija

SNES was my first, and it's propably still my favorite console - I've played Super Mario World and LoZ: Link to the Past way too much.

I wish I had grown up with Atari, though. I've played it and other older consoles afterwards, but it's not the same as actually living your childhood with them. But hey, it's not like I was capable of deciding when to born.
PsychDyke

The first home system I ever played was when I was 8, we went to our neighbor's house b/c our house had just caught on fire and they had PONG.  That was it, just one game consisting of two lines and a dot, but I was fascinated.  I'd tried the Atari 2600 and spent all my spare allowance at the arcade playing such amazing things as Donkey Kong and Asteroids.  When I was 13, my mom bought me a ColecoVision.  It had an attachment that played Atari 2600 games and it came with 2 games (Donkey Kong and Venture) and two gigantic controllers with number pads.  However, the games ran between $30-50 in the early/mid 80's, so we really couldn't afford them.  The Atari games were usually $10-20, so I got a lot more of those.  I only got one additional ColecoVision game and that was called "Campaign '84".  (I was 15 and yes, I picked it out).  The point was to become president by shaking hands, avoiding bad press, getting campaign contributions and dodging the issues.  I learned that carrying 51% of the vote in 13 states is enough to be elected president and which states to hit first.

That machine is also why I don't buy new game systems.  My mom payed $300 for it, the next year it was $150, the next year it was $100 and the next year it was obsolete.  I recently bought a Wii, which is the first NEW game system I've bought in my adult life.  I bought a NES when the SNES came out and so on.  That way I- a) don't spend 2-5X what something will cost in a couple of years and b) I don't end up with a Sega CD or a 3DO.  I was just looking at the wikipedia enteries for video game consoles. The generational history entries are interesting, IMO.  I was just looking at the original sale prices for the PS1 ($300 US) and the N64 ($200 US) and thinking that, by waiting, I paid 10% of that for mine.  With the PS1, I got 2 controllers, 8 games and a memory card for my $30 when one of my co-workers paid $300 for a new PS2.  I bought the Wii b/c it's different and b/c my wife isn't much of a gamer, but she does like the interactive types of games at places like Dave and Busters, so I thought we could be able to play together more with a Wii.

I still have every game system I've ever gotten, except that I did sell my GameBoy Color when Jodi bought me a GameBoy Advance SP since I could play all the games on that.  I've still got the ColecoVision that I've had since 1982 and the NES I've had since 1991 as well as all of those I've bought since, and they all still work.  I took the ColecoVision to work in 2000 after the presidential elections to help illustrate to the kids about the electoral college.  They played Campaign '84, although they were amazed at the crap graphics.  Very Happy

Peace,
Dumpling

My first console was an NES. It was my older sister's. I played a LOT of Mario on that thing. I also remember having an atari sometime after the NES, I think they got it at a garage sale. I played the hell out of some airplane game. I still have the joystick. *Sigh*

 But the first console  I got was a Sega Genesis with Sonic. ^^;
Lyska

Tubular!

I had an Atari 2600, but the Super Nintendo was the system that stole my heart. I played Mario for Super Nintendo for hours and hours and hours. I think I cried when I finished all the special levels.

I think I'll cry now. . .
FLY Kimberly

Mine was Pong...LOL... ok that shows my age..... Shocked lol....Atari was the next...
lostindenial

I was 7 when i got SNE and Sega genesis i also got sega gamegear i still have them and they still kick butt
KamiKiwi

When I was a kid we had a sega genesis (My brother broke it though...), NES, Snes, and also a N64 at home. They weren't mine though, the first console I've owned was my ps2.
hazelflag

I want to say the Commodore 64 was.  But that's not really a gaming system.

So Nintendo was the first, followed by sega genesis. I remember thinking how "awesome" the graphics were for the sega genesis...lol.
FyreHawk711

Atari 2600 - Missile Command was the goto game. After that an NES with Super Mario.

Hung out a lot at the video game arcades. Loved Defender, Joust, Omega Race, Robotron and Tempest. Still play some of them via XBLA.

Those were the days. Wink
acro_circus

First console was a NES, but the first gaming type device (I don't know what to call it) was the Game & Watch Donkey Kong. I loved that even though it was just the same thing over and over again lol, now I don't have the same attention span as I used to LOL. So what I'm trying to say is--- plastic bag, plastic bag, plastic bag O_O *runs off*
Vickie

My first console was actually the PS... The parents were rather strict when we were young. :S
J

My first was my GBA, and my first home console was a PS2. So no retro cred there then.
Frances

Super Nes! I remember saving for soooo long and then still had to convince my mum to let me buy a second hand one. My brother was so jealous i use to use it as a means of getting him to clean my room or do my chores just so he could play mario bros (he still likes to remind me how protective i was of it ;p)

I still have it somewhere, ahhhhh

Now I have a PS2, but seem to be playing on the PC more and more
TamedGypsy

What was before the Atari 2600???
there was one..and all it played was Pong... that was my first gaming console. Then the atari. Then DOS based PC games ("you see a lake, a bird is singing"), then EARLY windows platform games, then SNES, and now back to PC games (WoW) and Wii....
unhamburger

First proper console i played on was probably my sister's megadrive. The first computer games i played were on a BBC or an Atari ST. I used to own pong and sever other old consoles, but my mum threw them out when I went to uni  Sad
wardbunny

I remember being 5-6 and playing mini munch man handheld thing (beat my older brothers to the high score of HHH). I got my Brownie badge for computers at 8 with a 486, Windows 3.1 effort.
But for console it was a big old Game Boy Classic but that didn't last long. PSX, Game Boy Colour, PS2, GBA SP, DS and backing vocals from PCs and Macs.... Been a wild time of car racing and bizarre platformers.
Xanadugrrl

Atari 2600

My family had the Atari 2600 I was maybe 7 or 8 years old at the time, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.  My brother and I were addicted to Pitfall, and I don't think either of us actually finished the damn game.

The console that really turned me onto gaming was the old NES- the first time I picked up Super Mario 3 I was hooked- I can still play and win that game in less then 30 minutes when i put my mind to it.
FyreHawk711

wow! what a trip back in time... i also remember playing those BBS games. my favorite was a Star Trek space game where you typed in move coordinates and it calculated whether or not you hit your mark, a game object or the computer 'player' gotcha. the visuals (graphics) were just ASCII characters plotted on a black-white command line driven display, and your imagination drove the rest.

how things have changed! yay!
Zefbot

My first console was an Atari 2600 and a couple of el cheapo games for it that were pretty sucky and entirely forgettable.  I soon upgraded to the Sega Master System II and fell in love with platformers due to Alex Kidd in Miracle World and subsequent Alex Kidd titles.  Progressed to Sonic games which I thought were fantastic due to the speed of Sonic across the screen.  Soon after that learnt to appreciate RPG's such as Phantasy Star and Shining in the Darkness.

My console hardware progression has been:
Atari 2600
Sega Master System II
Sega MegaDrive
Nintendo SNES
as well as PC gaming which started on a 386SX-25 and where I fell in love with LucasArts point and click adventure games.

I have none of the latest gen consoles (except the handheld DS).

Handhelds have been:
Gameboy
Gameboy Colour
DS

I also bought and played GameGear and Atari Lynx and others well after there day when I began collecting.  Unfortunately cleared out heaps of stuff a few years ago and a lot of that stuff went with it.  Regret it now.  Still have a few collectable Nintendo Game and Watch games including Zelda and Donkey Kong II.

I played that too!!! It was great fun..and man, did we think we were cool as hell with it.... now look at gaming...whole new dimension
Tenko Kitsune

The first console game I played was Sonic the Hedgehog on the SEGA Master System. I was much more of a DOS gamer on my early years. The first console I owned was a egg yolk yellow, brick shaped GameBoy, which I loved very much 'till the day it died of old age, on my very hands. It was a sad day.
Mirax

Uuuh now I get all nostalgic ... I was only 10 and it was a ZX81 with 1kb memory and a ping pong game. Next a Spectrum before I got the absolute monster machine... a Commodore 64 with 256 colours and absolutely fabulous graphic for playing Frogger, Jet Pack  and all the text-based adventure games like Zork and the hobbit game, where I got helplessly stuck for days when trying to solve the puzzles. I also made my own Donald Duck adventure in Basic 3.5... those were the days  Very Happy
Panz26

The NES of course.  Super Mario (all 3 of 'em) was my favorite and I still play them now, when I'm feeling nostalgic.  Even my still-learning-to-be-a-gamer girlfriend can get on board when I pull out Mario or Pac-Man, unlike when I pull out GTA or FF
Babycha

NES. I wasn't that good, but I enjoyed watching my older brother play.
Ness~

I know my first one was the NES. I remember having all these games for it, especially basketball. Of course I didn't care much about the graphics back then so it was pretty amazing. I was also a PC Gamer around then and so I mostly switched between the two. It was a lot of fun for being around 4 years old. haha.  xD
