MMO Portal has an MMO Calendar as an annual, non-profit fund-raiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Those who order the MMO Calendar will be entered to win one of ten prizes available for each game of either 1 month of free game time or a beta key.

http://calendar.mmoportal.com/

Can anyone explain to me how how these months of free game time and the beta keys work? I don't play MMORPGs and don't intend to, and even if I did, I bet many of these games are Windows only. So, if I did win a prize and they sent me the key or whatever via email, would I be able to give it to someone else to use instead of me? Or is it tied to my email address?

IMHO, this is a good cause, to try to help kids with incurable diseases. I've donated to St. Jude's in the past. And I do need a calender for next year. Smile

Anyone know if I would be able to transfer a key or game time to someone else? It would be a shame to let it go to waste if I won...

Well if you sign up for beta mode on an MMOPRG, you play the game before anyone else. You are testing the game and its features so if there are any bugs, you can report it and the programmers can fix it before the game come out officially.

Yeah, I know, I do some beta testing for Mac games, but I wouldn't be able to for these, because I only use Macs and most of the games are for Windows, plus I hate MMORPGs! I just thought I would get a cool calendar while donating some money to a good cause, but if I win a prize I won't be able to use it. So since a lot of you all play MMORPGs, I thought maybe someone here would know if it was possible to transfer the key or free month if I won.

Maybe I'll forget about the calendar and just donate directly, like I used to....

I...I really don't need another MMO but I appreciate the offer. n.n;; There are quite a few 'free' MMOs out there but they usually get you by having items that you can only get if you buy their special ingame money, like Albatross18/Pangya with their Astros, but I think those at least cross over to any other MMO made by their company.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Basically a shared world RPG where you must play online and much or all of the content is provided by the gamer server (usually run by the company that makes the game). And if the company quits supporting it, that's it--no more game. example: World of Warcraft and Everquest.

You can play against other players or with other players, depending on the game.
Content is usually broken down into 2 catagories, PVP, (Player vs Player) and PVE, (Player vs Environment) I personally prefer PVE, where you and your friends can work together as a group to complete quests or missions. I find the competitivness of PVP too stressful, but lots of people prefer it. To each their own.

It REALLY depends on the game, and then what kind of server set up they have. World of Warcraft has a few different server set ups. It started with PvE (Player vs Environment/NPCs), PvP (Player vs Player) and RP (Role Playing). Eventually, they made hybrid servers (PvE-RP, PvP-RP). PvE on WoW means that for the most part, it's a non-PvP environment unless you choose to engage or flag yourself for PvP, or decide to jump into the various battle arenas they have set up.

Now, on a game like Anarchy Online, it's pretty much PvP all the time. There are 2 factions- Omni-Tek (think a mega corporation) and Clan (the worker rebellions). Normally, you would choose one or the other and butt heads but you do have the option of being a Neutral, but unfortunately, the pretty much left you open to attacks from EITHER side. I played a Neutral (being the Care Bear that I am) and was constantly having to dodge attacks from jerks that get a kick out of PKing (Player Kill).

So in some games, it's optional, in some, it's pretty much enforced and encouraged. Some games have specific zones or arenas set up for those that want to PvP but the rest of the world is 'safe' (ex. City of Heroes/Villains). It really does come down to the game and what works with the story.

But yeah, I'm in the PvE boat with Margali. If I wanted a PvP environment, I'd jump onto CounterStrike or something but when it comes to MMOs, I like playing against the environment and progressing through the story. I never go out of my way to make a character build for PvP because it kinda messes up group/party dynamics and functionality. I play MMOs to play WITH people, not against them. And really, a lot of the time, PvP is just too e-penis-y for me. Rolling Eyes
