"And really, a lot of the time, PvP is just too e-penis-y for me. "
Right with you Nekotine, I was a beta tester of Linage 2, A PVP centered game; Beautiful game, just stunning graphics for the time. But the level of hostility was terrible. Chat was a constant stream of taunts, threats, challenges, and insults. It felt like you were hip deep in virtual testosterone.
I'm an unapologetic care bear. Way more fun to play with someone rather then against them. _________________ Margali

That's why I don't play games online. I just don't like the behavior of some (many) of the people. They are rude and abusive, and often the language is full of hateful slurs about women and gay people. Even if it is only a few (and it seems that even if it starts as just a few, more join in), it ruins it all for me.

This is why I generally play ANY mmorpg with the chat window minimized, unless that's not an option, at which point, I turn off whatever General/Broadcast type of chat is available. People go on about the chat in The Barrens all the time on WoW, and while I get it, I never subjected myself to it as I turned off all non-guild chat, save for Looking for Team/Group and Trade. And as I mentioned before, I game mostly with people I know outside of the game so we'll coordinate stuff on Skype/Ventrilo/some kind of VoIP. It just really saves on the little sanity I have left. :3 _________________ Currently stuck on:

But yeah, I'm in the PvE boat with Margali. If I wanted a PvP environment, I'd jump onto CounterStrike or something but when it comes to MMOs, I like playing against the environment and progressing through the story. I never go out of my way to make a character build for PvP because it kinda messes up group/party dynamics and functionality. I play MMOs to play WITH people, not against them. And really, a lot of the time, PvP is just too e-penis-y for me. |
You should play Guild Wars then. You -have- to play WITH others in order to go against others. It got good PvE also. Plus it's monthly-free. _________________ I am anti-"txt tlk."

I played GW for a while when it first came out, not a bad game really, but after a while I did feel like "odd grrl out" because I refused to pvp. Still...free to play, nice graphics, smooth game play. I think carebears should have fun there if they hook up with others of alike mind.
But Ewwwwww those creepy double tailed scorpions that crawled up from under ground to attack you...Bleh, I hate those things!
Oh! And about the hostility issue. My experiences have been overwhealmingly positive when it comes to online game communities. Sure, there's always going to be an ass-hole or 2 in any large group, and run ins with them tend to stand out in one's memory. But on the whole, outside of the big PVP titles, most people are pretty cool. _________________ Margali

I've found it also really depends on the server you're playing on. RP servers get less assholes than PvP servers, and you don't actually have to RP on them to play on them. At least, the server I'm on, Earthen Ring, you don't. And if you want PvP action, you can always turn your PvP flag on and play against others with their PvP flag on.
So, yeah, RP servers = less losers. Also, if you report someone for homophobic slurs, Blizzard WILL prosecute. Their policy is "if someone complains, no matter what it is, we'll do something about it". Which pisses me off more than just making a policy of specific words and sticking to it, but there you have it.
Also, there ARE GLBTQA guilds out there, and guilds that are friendly to queer players. Earthen Ring has Faabulous, which is a GLBTQA guild, and my guild, Is Serious Business, doesn't take anything seriously, so we don't care what the heck you are. We pick on everyone equally, including ourselves. Heck, especially ourselves.. _________________
