I've been meaning to post this 2wks ago but haven't had time. I've been playing this game way in advanced of every1 else especially the beta. My buddy hooked me up with the legit retail copy of this game 3wks ago. I get hooked up every now and then and this time it's this game.
As usual I won't review this game in every detail like the ones ye read on magazines or online zines. I only "review" what is important to me thereby cutting to the chase and save myself another carpal tunnel syndrome incident.
Operation Flashpoint2: Dragon Rising is gorgeous. Yes it's better looking than cod6. Yes it sounds better than cod6 or any other shooters out this yr or perhaps nxt yr. Yes it is unequivocally more authentic or 'realistic' than cod6 or even ranbow six and/or GRAW. Yes it is indeed open world and the real estate is huge. Draw distance and dynamic lighting are amazing. Character details, environmental details and weapon details kick arse big time. It looks so good, sounds so good and playing it at the highest difficulty level hurts so good that it's as if yer at the combat zone yerself. If ye play on at least a 60" hdtv or in my case a 75" hdtv, ye will flinch and even dodge or duck yer head every so often when yer being shot at. If the above statements haven't deterred ye from wanting to play this game then yer definitely in for a good time.
This game is definitely not for wussies (it's a word now). This is not yer everyday fps where every1's rambo or ahnold running in or standing in the open and emptying yer magazine while smoking a cigar type of game. If ye do, ye'd get raped by the enemies every time. This game has excellent a.i. so if ye take yer sweet arse time planning yer movements during a firefight they will flank or root ye out of hiding then bitch slap ye around just so ye'd learn yer lessons right away. Ye can however take yer sweet arse time before ye engage a single enemy for if ye do it right, ye will feel a sense of accomplishment ye'd never felt in a while. Just like in real world combat (so I'm told, never been in one & it's just common sense), plan and strategize before going into battle so ye give yerself a better chance to succeed. Yer a.i. teammates are there for ye to command but command them well for they'll rip ye a new one. Keep them alive and they'll more than save yer arse. Playing on the highest difficulty will force ye to pay attention to yer teammates' chatter and if ye do, yer chance of survival is improved. They can see better than ye but not so well that it won't be balanced. There are times however that they seem to see or hear enemies like superman but once ye use yer binos ye'd realize that the enemies are within the proper range for elite soldiers to 'see' or 'hear.' There is no hud on hardcore mode and there is NO checkpoint. Yes if ye die ye start from the start of that mission. It is hard but still accessible because ye have to think and learn from yer mistakes ASAP. Order yer squad to flank or provide cover fire so ye can move to yer destination with a better chance of survival. Yer squad will die often in hardcore mode so THINK before ye act.
There are 11 missions (as far as I recall. ODST has my attention now so I may or may not be accurate) and in an intense open world game like this, keeping a level head will be the only thing that'll keep yer team alive. Ye can't let yer guard down while traversing in the open because the enemy sniper(s) will have a field day punching holes in yer head. The open gameplay forces ye to contantly make good decisions in order to survive longer. Ye can accomplish yer missions however ye want. There are no "right or "wrong" ways to do it. There's simply the good or the bad way to do it, where the good way is to die less often and the bad way is to die more often. No matter what way ye go with, ye will die. Later on in the game ye will be required to drive or fly one of several vehicles, i.e. fly a chopper and kick arse. There are also a multitude of weapons to choose from. Choose cqc (close quarters combat) weaps like a knife, pistol, m4's to assault weapons, sniper rifles, machine guns, or anti-tank/armor weapons.
The control scheme is simple yet complicated. It's kinda like the controls on GRAW and rainbow6 where the basic controls are where ye'd expect 'em while the others are layered underneath, i.e. the rt trigger is to shoot, lft to aim, etc. etc. Controlling yer teammates is achieved via the Command Wheel ordering yer 4 teammates or 1 marine to flank, hold position, etc. etc. Again, simple yet complicated.
This game is definitely for me or any1 else who love tactical, 'realistic', military shooters. This is definitely not for every1. If ye use yer common sense, plan and strategize b4 engaging the enemies, yer gonna live longer. Playing at the highest difficulty level is a real challenge; a challenge that borders on masochism. The key is to stay alive longer and die less often because no matter what ye do or how good yer reaction time is, ye will die more often than ye want to. Just make sure ye pay even more attention to yer teammates' chatter to ensure that yer survival rate will increase. They are very good in locating and calling out enemy positions. Finishing this game felt like I really accomplished something that I haven't done in a while. I'm sure those who'll play this game will feel the same way I did. I was mentally exhausted after finishing this game 'coz I had to stay focused just to stay alive just a little bit longer. Don't forget that in hardcore mode there is no checkpoint and yer squad will die a lot. It is hard but still doable. Talk about cathartic gaming -- this is it.

I loved the first one and I was really looking forward to this but I rented it first just in case. I don't know if it's just me but I can't play a mission without a glitch. And the friendly AI is really unfriendly, my squad keeps walking in front of my line of fire... don't get me wrong it's a nice game but they should have polished it more. This adds to my convinction that Codemasters should stick with racers.
