You can usually tell if a woman is a lesbian (or maybe bi-sexual) if she is checking out (or making out with) other women (but sometimes she's just checking out the clothes!). Other than that, unless someone is wearing a button or something, there's no sure way to know, IMHO.

Mervyn's, if I recall correctly. Interesting story behind that. I had just been hired by Fry's Electronics, and they have a fairly dressy dress code, so the lady who was going to be doing the orientation with me called and said I should pick up a dress shirt and a tie. I was kinda puzzled at first since I don't recall the women having to wear ties there but maybe it was a new rule? So I picked a few out, reported for my training and the lady was like 'Who told you to get a tie and guy shirt like that?' and I was like 'Umm, -you- did.' Apparently, she wasn't sure if I was a guy or girl from my name so she decided it'd be better to address me as a guy. <_<; Because Alanalohalani (yeah, that my full legal first name) sounds so manly? Ah well, I returned the shirts but decided to keep the ties because they were damn sexy. :3 _________________ Currently stuck on:

I have one or two close friends that are girls, but I'm definitely the type of girl who gets along better with guys. I grew up with one brother who've I've always idolized, so I guess he's one of the greater influences in my life.
In terms of butch/femme, I consider myself pretty androgynous, but I guess I'm walking on the butch side of things...although, I cringe at the whole butch/femme label, as it really feels very very 1998. LOL
Mostly, I identify as a silly but shy dork...more so than butch. *shrug* |

| I'm far from being butch. I feel myself femme. I enjoy wearing long hair, make-up, feminine clothes and shoes. At the same time I also like wearing sports and unisex styles clothes, enjoy training muscles to feel myself strong and interested in computer stuffs. I find attractive for myself both butch and femme girls. |

Well I consider myself a soft butch. I dont like girly things. I dont like skirts or dresses. I hate dressing up. I dont like makeup. I will wear pink only because I look good in pink, but its usually a tshirt or polo and its not my color of choice. I usually wear jeans or cargo shorts, bball shorts.
I am a big ball of emotions but like to do all the "manly" things. I love camping, the outdoors, fishing. I love new tools, doing stuff around the house...cars etc. _________________ ~ Darkfaerie129

ooh. label thread.
i would just describe myself as being a little from column a and a little from column b. i have my moments where i like to wear a dress and then perhaps a nice shirt and tie the next day. as far as mannerism, i'm kind of a squealy girl but like to pretend i'm hardcore. most people don't think i'm gay, until they see me making out with some chick...or drunkenly grabbing their ass. total romantic, cry at movies sap and awesome cook...who loves to go fishing or watch baseball with her daddy.
also a little spastic with broken trains of thought fueled by a shorter than average attention span. sorry for the lack of coherence. haha. |

I've never had the 'sir' moniker tossed at me. So, I guess that means I don't look butch... whatever that's supposed to look like.
Never liked dresses. Never. Had to wear them to church (ex mormon), and on holidays as a kid... Dad beat me into them. Was also forced to wear those poodle looking Toni hair perms too.
Now, I just have a short cut, not too short... and most importantly, no perms!
Casual dresser with comfortable shoes. Never could wear heels. Now I'm into Earth shoes. They are fantastically comfortable, especially if you have back pain after prolonged periods of standing. I work in the semiconductor fabrication industry, where chairs are taboo.
Even through I don't stand out as a stereotypical lesbian, folks still kinda know or figure out that I am. I don't tell people unless they ask. Sometimes they do.
I live with my partner in the Pacific NW with 7 cats. We need the cats to stay warm. lol |

| I don't really identify as butch or femme. Somewhere in between, if I had to place myself. I wear makeup, do my nails and hair, and own a fair amount of dresses and high heels. On the other hand, some days I go completely punk: Jeans, t-shirt with (generally) stupid slogan, converse shoes, studded belt, and emo hair. My hair is short, but that's mostly 'cause I'm lazy. People generally don't assume I'm gay, tho I volunteer the information freely if asked. |

I identify as me... as a queer woman who tends to loathe labels. Those're for clothes and all that.
If I absolutely had to explain myself to give others an idea of what I'm like IRL, I'd be apt to say 'tomboy femme'. While I'm percieved as girly (my g/f got me a pink DS... LOL), I don't act a lot like it. I have enough gender variancy in me to give rip-roarious belches but like clothing that shows me off (although I don't show a lot of skin). I have a stuffed animal collection but can't get enough of the Grand Theft Auto games.
I'm just me, really. I think if labels meant a lot to me, I'd have a hard time navigating socially since I tend toward hermitism and whatnot. Just give me my books, games and music and a loving partner and I'm happy as a pig in poop. |
