I would like to know how people here feel about anti-female language, or even if you consider it a problem for women and the goal of mutual respect and equality.

When I say anti-female language I am generally referring to the use of words which are curses, not only if they are directed at you, but also how they are used in jokes or casual statements, especially online. I am not sure how to give examples here actually without offending someone. This could also be a question about anti-male language, but I sure don't see that nearly as much, though it also happens.

It seems that many people do not consider this to be a big deal. I do. Sounds like misogyny to me, and I think it just gives permission for disrespect of women to continue when it is tolerated. When I have tried to express how I feel the responses are rather predictable, not just in the straight world, but also in the queer community.

We are just joking.
You are over reacting.
You are wrong.
You think too much, or are taking things too seriously.
No, I am not anti-female.
Words do not hurt anyone, only actions.
This is about free speech, not your delicate sensibilities.
OMGZ a Femanazi!!!

It actually ruffles my feathers when I hear men jokingly call each other girls, or girl is used to mean an insult. Or, pussy=weak for example. Why does masculinity in some groups need to mean anti-female? An intense example would be to listen to Mike Tyson for a while.

I could say more and have certainly given it much thought over the years. It seems so obvious where it all comes from. Being online and gaming I hear such talk more than ever. Perhaps this is partly due to the anonymous factor of the net, still very revealing.

I have stopped using most curses myself because of how I feel. If I stub my toe my favorite one would be sh**! Somehow it isn't as satisfying if you say it all the time! I can honestly say that I have not called my wife a bitch, or anything like that, not in 20 years.

Opinions please?

Edit 1/26: I guess I should call this a rant on my part. Rather than a question to the forum. There are plenty of places to discuss such a topic. Wink

Well um i dont find it offensive because its just slang and they dont mean it to be hurtfull. but if they say it to be rude then it pisses me off. i call people dicks or cunts when they are mean.

I find it extremely offensive and call them on it.  I really hate how the media and entertainment industy (including comic books) use insults like bitch all the time,  but censor words that would be derogatory to men, like prick or dickhead.

One of the reasons that I am not watching the new Terminator show is because of the casual derogatory attitudes toward females.

I also hate how "gay" is used to mean stupid, how "girl" is used to mean less than a guy, etc.

People finally, in  general, stopped saying things like "that's awfully white of you" or "jew you down" and other racial and religious casual slurs, and have generally come to accept that it is rude and derogatory to whole groups of people, but have instead focused their slurs on women and gay people, it seems.

i call them on it now, more than i used to.... especially after the Imus incident. i also don't like gay slurs, and really think gays shouldn't use them if they want others to stop using them.

nothing changes if people don't stop using them.
