Wellll let's see.....I've searched all over the net, but could not find any real solutions to my problem, or didn't quite understand the ones being offered. So I thought it couldn't hurt to ask the ladies here.

Hope this is ok.

Let's see, I have many many ps2 games. They all work perfectly. I ordered OKAGE: Shadow King recently, and when it came, looked to be in VERY good condition. No smudges, marks, scratches, even the case and manual was in perfect condition. This is a used game, btw.

Anyways, I put it in, and get this reddish screen that says:
"Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc".

.....Now this is a PS2 game. Does that not count as "PS2 format"? Then there's the thing about mod-chips (mod-chip.com, but there are so many, I don't know what modchip to get, or if I did, how I would use it.

I read somewhere that you can do a "auto diagnosis". I followed the steps in examples but apparently my PS2 has no such feature.

It plays EVERYTHING else perfectly. The disc looks perfect......
Anyone with detailed descriptions of these "modchips" and where I might find the appropriate one?

Ok, went to a gamestop and had a guy point something out for me.

I didn't know that the PS2 had 2 lazers, one for DVD discs and one for compact discs. Apparently the one for compact discs needs cleaning/replacement/whatever, but that would cost about as much as it would to buy another PS2 (used). So I'm very torn.

The game itself only cost $5....but it's one I've GOT to play. Strange, stupid, or whatever.
Any advice would be appreciated.

That's a common problem with the PS2 system, which is unfortunate. I had the same problem once, and I know that when I worked at Gamestop a lot of people complained about it. I would recommend getting a new or used one- they're not that expensive. 60 dollars or so. Replacing the laser seems like a hassle and it's probably not worth the money. If you do buy a used system, however, make them test an actual DVD movie and also a very old PS2 game (blue disc) to make sure both lasers are okay.

Hope this helps.

You can buy replacement laser readers off eBay for cheap all over the world, the only problem is trying to actually install it yourself. If you can't do it then your going to have to pay someone else to do it for you, im glad my Uncle taught me. Smile
