I'm lucky - I live in Brighton, England and if you didn't know we have a large LGBT and student population here. This means generally - no one stares or cares.

I used to have long hair and was a regular visitor to the "Hungry Years" a grungy old rock night club. It was great and I was "straight."
Only when I was 25 did I really admit to myself that I was gay and I was a bit worried how my friends would react.
My friends ofc were all blokes - geeky roleplayers, computer gamers and metal fans.
Luckily, they were all pretty cool about it all and it made little difference to them.

I wouldn't say I'm really butch but I have short hair and wear black jeans, T-shirts, Hoodies and Dr Martin boots in my own time and ladies trouser suits at work.
The look I identify with is "alternative" rather than dykey. I usually have bleached white blond hair which I occasionally dye red / purple / pink. My left ear has 2 lobe piercings and 1 upper cartiledge piercing.

My hobbies do tend to be male-dominated ones - I used to do Historical re-enactment and now just do the sword fighting bit. I have owned motorbikes but now have a car.
I like punk, metal, alternative rock but also folk music.
I have two black cats and my beliefs are kind of Jedi / pagan.

These labels always confused me. I mean, for some folks it's a little easier.. they know what they are, and what they want. It's dynamic and clear for them.
My gender is rather fluid, and even though I'm only so far attracted to women.. "lesbian" was never a label I used to describe myself.

I like "queer"! I'm a boyly girl.. .. person, and I'm done trying to fit a mold.

However, there is something to be said for one's outward image. People see me for the first time, and assume I date women. My best friend on the other hand has to fend off straight men.. and queer women NEVER pick up that she's gay.

I think that would be hard. You'd have to wave that little pride flag around all the time if you were hoping some dashing lesbian would fly down to scoop you up. I think she feels as though she's missing out on something.

(I wonder how many times in my life I've typed "lesbain" instead of "lesbian".. ughk.. lesbain.. a charm to ward off the nefarious lesbain!)

I don't like stereotypes either, but I'd be considered butch.  Couple ex girlfriends liked to call me gentlemanly lol!  I don't try to be butch but it just seems to come natural to me.

When I hear the word Lesbian, the first thing I think of is a strong woman, and the next is a strong woman who loves other women.  Smile

I'm just proud of who I am as a person.  Let the gawkers gawk and the homophobes whine.  I'm just trying to be me.

I personally like to think of myself as a little bit left of the middle I'm more butch than femme for sure. I have always been a tomboy and I like being outside and doing alot of things that people generally associate with male gender roles....For me the butch/femme thing isn't so much about what you look like or how you dress its more about how you how you realte and interact with people...I don't think that the definition of butch and femme should be limited to gender roles where butch=male femme=female As far as the word lesbian I picture the stereotypical femme girl  Dyke (a word that I have come to love) makes me think of butch womyn

I really hate the labels and stereotypes, as well. But I'll give this a shot.

Appearance wise most people just assume I'm a teenage boy (I am 26 years young).  Even as a little girl with long hair all the way down my back people thought I was a boy.  I guess I have boyish features?  Through out my school years I would get hit on by girls all the time (them thinking I was a guy).  I do have 8 brothers (I'm the only girl and the youngest), so that may also have a lot to do with my tomboyishness (new word? lol)

Even now if I go out to a gay club I'd never been to, I'd be hit on by gay MEN and a lesbian would never approach me because they'd just assume I was a guy. I really don't mind it but I hate the fact when I get carded sometimes people think I have a fake ID.  One time I got so pissed because this guy tried to tell me I'm a guy and he wouldn't sell me anything, so I flashed him. LOL  He was shocked and the look on his face....priceless!  BTW, that's the only time I've flashed a dude in my life, or anyone besides my girlfriend.

Anyways, more about myself....I guess if you were to label my style, I'd say preppy?   I like wearing polos (Hollister, GAP, Ralph Lauren, Nautica etc.), tees, loose fitting jeans (but not hanging off my ass), cargo pants/shorts, and all that good stuff.   Laughing   I have been in an amazing relationship with a wonderful beautiful woman (she's the extreme girlie girl) for almost 8 years now.  And of course I'm a video game addict. that's about it...
