What does it mean to be 'white'?

Comment your initial response/reactions to that question then highlight the text below (even though you can kinda already see it...)

( Just so you know there actually IS text here... okay, so yeah, this is for a homework assignment. basically, i'm supposed to go out and ask random people that question then record their reactions. i'm sure it's probably more amusing to do in person or at least in a more conversational way but i'm curious to see what kind of response i get here (if any LOL).

anyways, PLEASE don't go back and edit your answers. i/my professor wants RAW reactions so even if you think you said something silly, just leave it. the only thing i want you to do now is to add your age, race and current occupation. umm...i guess you can private msg that info to me if you don't want it to be posted on the board for all to see. n.n;

thanks and cookies to those that answered!
)

Uh to be fair-skinned? Wow I'm a literal one >.<
That's a pretty open question there. If you meant behaviour wise then I don't know as I'm not white and don't really know many people that are.
Where I'm from if you're white you're either a tourist or from a certain area of the country and could be hated or loved for that skin colour. Personal experience had me seeing people that thought fairer skin tone to be better or others with indifference to the issue.

Ok on to read the white text!

[EDIT] No I didn't change anything lol... I don't mind the info you ask for

oh btw if you need to know my island is pre-dominantly African and Indian, to a lesser extent Chinese and Mixed, with a few other races in there that aren't a large percentage.

It's strange for me to see this question today.  I'm turning 31 today and I've asked myself so many questions.  Most of them had to do with my family.  Me being gay.  My relationship with my father, brother, sister, and Mom...  but being "WHITE".... no.   Yes I am "white", but more to the point I'm.... French, Irish, Swedish, and whatever else..... a mutt by today’s definitions.  I'm a correctional officer in the USA which means I see it all... white, black, Hispanic, whatever... and anything else.  Race.  Does it really play a role in today’s world, I'd like to think not.  In my experience it's not about White, Black, Green, Yellow, Red, Orange, Purple... or whatever... it's about your "hood".  Where you came from.  YOUR family.  What you were brought up in.  In my line of work I see "bloods", "crisps", "white supremacists, "Mexican gangs", and everything in between.  In the end "WHITE" is just a color, like orange, green, yellow.... or any other.  Makes no difference.  You are how you ARE.  Clashed I know, but true.

Don't know if this will help you, but it's been that kind of day for me.  Wink

The first thing I thought was to be Caucasian.  Simple I know but it's a pretty open ended question and If you where to add deeper context to it, then I'd think more about it. But there you have it, my first thought. This question reminds me of times that people have questioned my blackness (mostly black people)i.e you're not black enough, you don't do too many black things etc. As if to say if I don't embody your stereotypical black person then I'm lesser or something.

White? Skin color. It means nothing else. Being "Caucasian" doesn't make you a certain personality or make you like certain things. You end up who you are because of what you are taught, where you live, who your friends are etc.

Race: Caucasian
Occupation: Uni Student (graduating May 11, woo!)

White... hmmm.
I guess to be White is to be apart of a majority, at least in Canada and the USA. I've found that white people tend to have a slightly higher advantage when it comes to the job market and income but other than that it doesn't seem to "mean" anything.

Whites or Caucasians are divided into other sub groups based on Nationality and religion etc. so there isn't much uniformity in what the perspective on what it means to be white is, or at least that's what I've noticed Smile. Same can be said for Blacks or Latinos or Asians or Native American's but there doesn't seem to be a bonding experience for all white people to unify themselves.

Age: 20
Race/Ethnicity/Whatever: African American, Native American, White-Jewish (if you want to count that)
Occupation: Student!

..I'm not white. I'm a funny sortof tangerine/pink/milky-cream colour.

Colour is just that.. and in people, just a result of melanin, due to some racial location in relation to the sun at some point or other.  More in the skin the closer to the sun you are and all, so that must mean that Martians are just little melanin factories Smile.

Of course there are always physical conditions which means an individual lacks melanin pigment. Or has patchy skin, in which case they are usually feared, or avoided within a society.
