I hope I'm not the only one playing this. It's still got bugs but even with the bugs, I'm still having a blast on it. I even put down the $150 for the lifetime subscription! Yes, crazy is me.
I also still have my accounts on City of Heroes/Villains and LotRO alive though Hellgate has 'eaten my soul', so to speak. _________________ Currently stuck on:

| I haven't heard much about this, you'll have to tell me some more. I try and stay away from MMORPGs as I know I will lose my life to them and I have so little time at the moment! Is it really good then? I assume so. |

MMOs are just about all I play. Currently I'm alternating between WoW and LotRO.
I'll probably give it a try sometime in the future, but I've seen alot of bad press about it since launch; bugs, billing issues, character wipes. I'm glad to see someone excited about it. I think I'll give it a few months for them to get it tweaked and a bit better polished. _________________ Margali

I was considering it since I had quit WoW for sometime and was hearing about it, but I started playing WoW again and don't want to abandon my guild as we're doing very well progression wise. If a free trial comes out a little later without all the bugs and whatnot, I'll probably give it a try. It seems interesting. I was kind of looking forward to Warhammer moreso than Hellgate though. _________________

Before I start, I'd just like to say that Flagship has decided to extend the beta to the 21st so if you're curious, go sign up now! You'll be able to keep these characters if you chose to buy the game.
Kind of addressing everyone first (individual response are below), HGL is not really an MMO, just like Diablo is not really an MMO. Like Diablo, you can choose to play HGL as a single player offline or as multiplayer online. You have to pay the initial $50-60 for the game, depending on whether you get the normal or collector's edition, but even if you want to play online, you have the CHOICE of whether you want to actually subscribe or not. As a subscriber, you will CURRENTLY get access to:
More than the default 3 character slots
More storage space in your locker
Special "event" quests/items (Halloween, Guy Fawkes Day, etc)
Guild creation/management
Hardcore Mode (same as in Diablo)
Might seem like a short list but as I mentioned, this is what the CURRENT pluses are. In the future, subscription will also give access to:
New Levels to Explore
New Monsters
New Weapons
New Skills and Spells
New Character Classes
Raid-Level Areas
Seasonal / Themed Events and Items
Additional Difficulty and Game Play Modes
Additional PvP Modes and Rewards
Achievement Rewards
Advanced Guild Management Tools
Web-based Rankings and Character Viewing
The breakdown of characters is like this. There are 3 factions that are working together to seal the Hellgate, and each faction has 2 classes. For the Templars, you have the Guardian (tank) and Blademaster (human blender). For the Hunters, you have Marksman (ranged artillery) and Engineer (Marksman-lite but with the bonus of robot companions). Lastly, the Cabalists have Evokers (mage) and Summoners (warlocks). I'm a ranged nut for the most part so Hunters are my personal favorite.
Now gameplay. This is where I feel that HGL kicks the butt of Tabula Rasa, which I was also keeping an eye on. While you can play the game via third person view, if you're playing either a Hunter of Cabalist class, you have to option of playing via a FPS view. Now, unlike TR, if something shoots at you, you actually STRAFE to AVOID GETTING HIT! :O In TR, which is definately MMO, the computer decides whether or not you get hit, regardless of you strafing or not. Since the gameplay is a lot more like Diablo than an MMO, the action is much more fast paced and unpredictable.
Travel is also quite easy in this game as it's based around portals. How many times do you get a party together on WoW, only to have to wait another 15-30 minutes for them to all gather in one spot, pending on wheter you have a warlock in the group or not? On HGL, once you're in a party, you can instantaneously 'teleport' to a teammate by opening a Party Portal, which is available without the use of a device. It is an actual built-in party teleport. The only limitation is if your party member is in an area that you've not gained access to yet due to not completing certain missions/objectives. Also like in Diablo, if you find that your inventory is getting full, you have Personal Relocation Device that will send you back to the last station you visited so that you can sell or dump items into your storage, then send you back to the instance you were in. If you're just plain done with an instance, you can use your Recall skill, available to all players, that will transport you back to the station you visited last but unlike the PRDs, will not let you return to the instance. And once you've 'unlocked' and visited a station, you are able to teleport to that station and any other you've unlocked and visited via Station Tram Terminal. No more having to save gold for a mount! Yay!
I could go on but I'll stop here but if anyone has any specific questions, I'll be happy to answer them to the best to my knowledge/ability.
As far as bugs, yeah, the game still has quite a few of them, mainly a big memory leak problem but it's been improving for me so I'll take that as a sign that they are working on it. As far as the character wipes, as far as the US servers go, after they went live from beta, there weren't any but the SE Asia server did have to go through a wipe since there was no other way to implement a necessary patch. The billing issues have now been resolved and are running smoothly. People complain about launches gone wrong but really, when has ANY game launch ever been 100%? Heck, even Disneyland had it's problems, and continued to have them when they opened the new Tomorrowland and Toontown. But I have faith in the Flagship crew so I'm sticking with HGL.
@vampiresslupus:
Yeah, I know what you mean about not wanting to leave the guild behind. It's always hard when I decide to leave an MMO because I meet and make so many friends there, and I hate to leave THEM but I also can't justify paying $10-15 a month to be able to converse with them on a game I just don't really enjoy and have fun 'playing' anymore. And I -tried- playing WoW again after taking a hiatus since Burning Crusade was being released (Yes, I was one of the crazies at the Sunnyvale Fry's Electronics store midnight release. I brought my Macbook to keep me warm and entertained people by playing the Southpark WoW episode while waiting. XD) and it was fun for a month or so as I followed the storyline of the Blood Elves but yeah...just couldn't stick with it after that. I hope things continue to go well for you and your guild though!
@Margali:
Waiting might not be too bad of an idea since they are still trying to iron things out. I'll probably be updating here as they make changes so check in if you're still interested. :3
@Gadget Girl:
Unlike most MMOs, HGL will not swallow your life if you don't want it to. It's more than possible to go in, do a few missions in one map, then exit out. Of course, as you progress through the game, the maps get a bit longer and more difficult thus taking a bit more time to clear but in comparison to running a raid instance like in WoW or LotRO, the time and effort is definately more on the casual side. _________________ Currently stuck on:

It's action-heavy but lacking in the story department. FSS will patch the game, so you shouldn't really worry about long time stability issues. If you like action and Diablo type games, you will like HGL.
I wrote a review of the beta here. _________________

Agreed, the story is not the most solid one out there and you really don't feel the whole URGENCY thing until Act IV. Even then, some of the missions you're giving on the side are kinda '....huh?' since some people will be worrying about impressing a girl when there are demons to be dealt with but hey, people deal with stress in different ways? I'm kinda glad they don't make it TOO gloomy though as it would take away from some of the 'fun' factor. I mean, c'mon, the stuff that Lucious has you do in Act III are comedy platinum, though not for poor Techsmith 314.
IIRC, they're already getting ready for the next mini-expansion patch so hopefully, that will push the story a bit more. Also, reading the comic that came with the Collector's Edition helps.
And yeah, I've already seen improvements as far as the memory issues on my end but I know my friend is still having to reboot after every full instance we do. Even if the game doesn't crash, they'll reboot just to be on the safe side but it sure doesn't stop them from playing more. One of them is just happy that she can FINALLY play a paladin-like class that's more in a sci-fi-ish setting, rather than purely fantasy. :3 _________________ Currently stuck on:

| I played hellgate in the alpha, beta and then when it launched and totally enjoyed it but felt when I hit the last boss it was unfinished. I know you can play in nightmare and elite but I was only around lvl 30 when I beat the last level. I still play some but have been bouncing between Fury, Warhammer beta, and wow. I also played Lotro. I had a Minstrel but felt the end game wasn't that great. I am looking forward to Conan and Warhammer Online this year. |
