Just started playing HL2 last night. I'm impressed with the story, the game play, the graphics and the characters so far.And I was pleased to see Alyx save me (a gal saving a dude? OMGAWESOME!) and to see that she's not just a pretty face... she's smart and kick-ass and doesn't look like she's there just for the pr0n factor.

So... any hints or tips I should know that will save me frustration in the days to come? Anyone wanna talk HL2?

I haven't played it yet, but I did get the Orange Box, so we will see. I am actually keen to try it as I have nothing to do this Thursday. Of course, Source is a wonderful engine. Smile

It's a pretty intensive engine. It would take forever to load and then keep crashing on me until I read some docs on the Steam website and found out that it and my antivirus (AVG, although Norton also has the same problems) were battling for resources. (IF you have problems, check out the help information they give you on the Steam website... it's actually helpful)

I can only play it when I turn off my antivirus. And not just turn it off... completely unload it from memory.

Even THEN, it takes a good minute to load, and it takes about half a minute between sections.

I'm in the trainyard, if I remember correctly. I climbed over top of that tanker, went to the other side, and now I'm trying to find my way through the maze of trains. The problem is, I can't see half of the time because my monitor is so dark, even when I crank it up all the way! And when I can't see, I end up getting shot at.

I only played for about an hour, and some of that time was taken up listening to the speech from the Administrator. (Whom I only realized was the same as the one in HL when Alyx told me... [I always hated that asshole!]) Oh, and dealing with it crashing and getting that fixed.

I want to know if you ever get to play as Alyx. 'Cause she kicks ass!

I have to admit... it was good to be Gordon again. To see Barney and the Scientist. I actually had a "moment" when it was time to put my HEV suit on again. Smile And that part about the debeaked headcrab was fantastic! Very Happy

Oh, you have to go INTO a train? Well, that's more than I knew right there. That's helpful.

How do you get out of the train yard eventually? Is it going into a train or is there some sort of exit? As far as I remember, there's forcefields on either end.

Wow, it's been a while since I played HL2...back when it was released for Xbox. My computer is no good for playing graphic heavy games (even if they are 'older').

To answer your question, no, you don't get to play as Alyx. I'm pretty sure you never do, even in The Orange Box.

I've got Orange Box, but I played this through ages ago on the original Xbox so my mind is very foggy on it. My hints and tips would be in the form of, save up your patience for the 'jumping' levels as they frustrated the hell out of me. Why they put jumping levels in FPS titles is beyond me, there should be a rule that says NO! IF I CAN'T SEE MY FEET I DON'T JUMP!!

It's a stupendous game though and no, you don't get to play as Alyx, and so far on Epi one I haven't either.

sorry took so long to anwser...with the holiday and starting a new job its been hectic...and i am at work so i have a quick moment....um so yeah like i am pretty sure one of the train cars has a opening in its roof and you jump up then walk/run along the top of the trains and hop on a little platform then onto a walkway (this is on the opposite side from where you entered the trainyard......so thinking quick thats the deal...let me know if thats not right...i can totally replay that area and figure it out quick! good luck!
